say something to us we can learn
« on: Sep 25, 17, 09:05:06 PM »
The nervousness was eating at his stomach but Nasir was able to push past it. Even if he had to admit that he was pushing past it because of the flickers of curiousity and interest that came from those who were there. There had not been a Vasile to serve in some time, not since he was little, and he was sure that they wondered if this was some kind of ploy, some kind of plan, but it wasn't.

Unless one counted his own to actually make his family do something other than stay on the outskirts and let that destroy them.

Nasir straightened his sleeves, adjusted his cufflinks a little, and waited to be granted audience to meet with the Queen. He was wearing a nicely cut suit that complimented him and his skin tone. A not inconsiderable time had been spent making sure that there was nothing left of the stables, or the horses, left upon his clothing, his belongings, or himself. It left him with a faint earthy scent, not unpleasant, and no cologne.

(No cologne because why would he do that? Risk a chance that someone with a sensitive nose did not like the smell of it or it made a bad impression? It was best to simply be himself and that was what he was doing.)

The saving grace - though not really a saving grace, simply a fact - was that Nasir had already been friendly and talking with some of the members of the Court. Left to his devices, waiting for his audience, he was inclined to socialize and acclimate. Standing idle, alone, did not work for him and so he made a few acquaintances (many who were surprised to even see a Vasile here, never mind that he was a Warlord Prince who was unbonded).

"The Queen will see you now."

Nasir smiled, excused himself from the conversation he was having and moved to follow the courtier to meet with the Queen. The nervousness was still there, a faint flutter in his stomach, but letting the feelings of others helped - again - to ease that. It was one thing to make the motions, to make the offer and send the missives, and another to be here in person to follow through.

In his mind it was simple: if the Vasile were going to stay alive, they had to do this, they had to serve. What better place to do so than in the court of a new Queen, coming into her power and position?

The last Queen of Northwood hadn't had a Vasile in her Court. Most Courts, unless they'd been together for almost two decades, hadn't had a Vasile. Once, it'd been something of a coup, Dare gathered. Her father had been impressed when she'd mentioned that there was a  young Warlord Prince of the family coming to meet her for a place at the Northwood District Court. Impressed, yes, and wary: this was the sort of thing that spawned intrigues, and Nestor was very cautious about intrigues near his daughter-Queen. Not cautious enough to leave his position as an advocate, but still, he'd been very careful to emphasize to Dare exactly how concerned he was. For her part? She found the whole thing quite exciting, and had had to take a calming draught that morning to stop herself from going quite over the moon.

Excited as she was, Dare remembered her manners. Once she heard that Prince Vasile had arrived, she had taken her sweet time arranging for the servants to have tea brought to her. She didn't keep him waiting, oh no, but she certainly let him idle. She was a new Queen, and there was much to do. It didn't make her look too busy for him, it made her look dedicated.

So she stood up when he entered, because she was a good and polite Queen, her hands against the desk because visually speaking it would direct his eye to her face. And she saw Nasir Vasile and her whole world re-ordered itself. It wasn't like with her father, with whom the world had always been in this strange configuration where she knew if she told Nestor Comstock to cut his own throat he would do it, if she truly had need of it. She knew her father like she knew no one else. Nasir Vasile, Prince Vasile, a Warlord Prince of a good family for all they were backwater, was an unknown.

Her unknown.

"Prince Vasile," she said. She sounded shocked. She felt shocked. "I. My name is Darienn Comstock. You... you applied to serve in my Court as an escort, is that... is that right?"

It wasn't like her to stutter. It also wasn't like her to bond males like Nasir Vasile.

Nasir certainly did think that this Queen - one he hoped to serve - was dedicated. It did not feel, to him, as if he was kept at bay due to simply keeping him out but instead that she was likely handling affairs. There was an air about the Court, despite it's freshness, that spoke of things being handled a certain way.

Everything had a place, everything in it's time.

That could be appreciated, truly.

With a pleasant smile already on his face, Nasir nearly paused as his senses felt the first brush of what was surely the Queen's feelings. Something about them was richer, sharper even, but more than that: they felt right, slotting right in next to his own without the same overwhelming sensation that others had.

His eyes were drawn to her hands first, the curve of her forefinger to her thumb, before they raised to meet her face and-

Nasir's breath was caught in him, his entire world freezing as their eyes locked. It shattered as she spoke but all the pieces were knitted back together, strung piece by piece with Darienn Comstock the one orchestrating it all. Her shock was his shock, a half-step forward taken towards her as Nasir let out the breath he had been holding without realizing.

He stopped himself but it took everything to not just go to her. My Queen, he thought, My Queen. The thoughts in his head were spiralling, still centered around this Queen - this woman who had just recently took the seat of Northwood, this woman who was an unknown, this woman who would he would do anything for. It's what everything in him was telling him and he knew it for what it was for: a Queen's Bond.

Younger he might've fought against it, instead there was almost a sense of relief that came through him.

Nasir blinked, coming to himself after what felt like too long (but really, she had just finished speaking), and nodded. "A pleasure to meet you, my Queen." A pause, his tongue running quickly across his bottom lip as he realized what he had just said. His mouth was dry. "I did apply, yes. To serve." Another pause. "Within your Court and support you."

His speech seemed stilted, not at all like him as the stuttering was not like Dare, and pulled in another. Nasir bowed then, deference and attention made to the nature of their positions within Etiquette and Protocol. "Prince Nasir Vasile, my Lady," another slip but this one without realizing, "and I would serve you if you would have me."

There had been more words, something more formal and less off the cuff, but those were gone from his mind. They had been replaced with a simple knowledge that repeated itself: I am hers, she is mine.

Nasir didn't stutter, as she did, but he did seem to find this as altogether mind-blowing as Dare did. His eyes didn't leave her face and hers didn't leave his. What if she looked away and it turned out she'd daydreamed the whole thing? The Vasiles were people to know. Their disappearance, according to her father, had been the source of so much gossip in the Territory Courts that he had honestly suspected foul play, some sort of blackmail by an enemy, but no single family had stepped in to take their roles. Each duty, each hole in the courts, went piecemeal to this male and that one, which had puzzled him at the time. "I would have you," said Dare. Of course she would have him. His mere presence would've been a coup, but no Dharoan Queen ruling held a Vasile leash. They were a Westwood family, too, she recalled suddenly. This... this gave her leverage.

Dare alone was not special, as a Queen, but a Northwood Queen claiming the allegiance of a scion of a Westwood family... A smile tugged at the corners of her mouth. She straightened. Those moments of stunned staring allowed her to pull herself back together. Her males, it seemed, all shared her Jewels, both birthright and rank. That seemed a good omen. Lavinia would be able to run roughshod over the lot of them, of course, but she would have done it on sheer force of personality anyway.

"Your application was specifically for an escort in the First Circle," said Dare, looking down at the sheets on her desk. "But my father has ever told me to be smart with the men who were bound to me. Tell me, do you have the training to serve as First Escort?" It was a trick question. Dare's cool brown eyes crinkled just slightly at the corners, though her lips didn't curve with a smile. Nasir Vasile, as a male, would've been best in the First Circle. But Nasir Vasile, her male, served best at her side... The only male of the maternal line, a future Viscount once his mother passed on the title. Titled nobility was rare, and it almost always indicated someone in the Territory Court. He would join her in her District Court, and that would give her leverage to rise. "It would honor me if you would take up a side of my Triangle."

"I would have you."

A true and honest smile spread across Nasir's face when he heard those words. Things within settled into place, an invisible line of tension he had not even realized was there easing away. There were plans, of course, that he was forgetting of in light of this revelation. Nasir wanted to ease the Vasiles back into things, to show that his family still was capable of more than just horses and the cachet they had from the past.

They had been a force to be reckoned with, their name carried weight and power and he would see it return to what it once was and make it greater. Darienn Comstock could help with that, they could help each other, but he was still gathering his wits after this life-changing discovery. As the stun wore off, as his Queen composed herself, Nasir did so as well.

The corner of his mouth twitched upwards, just a bit higher, as he listened to her. There was excitement and anticipation building at the thought of not just being part of the First Circle. He knew he was more than capable, knew the Vasile name could guarantee him more, but he was not the sort to pluck at things he had not earned himself with his own hands.

"I do have the training, yes," said Nasir with a hint of amusement, answering the trick question anyway. "Both my mother and grandmother would have words, not kind ones, if I did not." Even if they were not sending their males to Court, they were still expected to be trained and to be schooled.

"If it would honor you," a step forward was taken, his shoulders straightening and his chin raising just a little; Nasir was free with his expression, it seemed, "then I will honor you, my Queen, and gladly take a place within your Triangle and serve you as First Escort." It seemed almost fitting that he would do so, that this place was his, as their shared Jewels - birthright and rank - were not lost to him. More than that, he knew he was quite capable of looking after the wellbeing of another. Her happiness and desires would be sought after and taken care of with him in place.

Another time he would think about how this moment was a major political one - not just for himself, but for Dare as well - but it was tucked away for contemplation later.

Dare shuffled the sheets before her, pulling to the forefront the contract that was intended for her First Escort. Her cool brown eyes darted from side to side as she reviewed the terms, checking off each clause she had placed into the legal document before her. It had been carefully and consideringly written by her father, bound into place by a Prince; the price for breaking the contract without Dare's consent and approval was suitably harsh. The days of service, how the Escort would accrue his personal time. Her expectations, and what she would offer him in exchange. She had written the expected stipend in just that morning while considering her father's suggested applicants. It was more than fair, she thought, and finally she dipped her fountain pen in the ink and filled Nasir's name in where space was left for it. Her tight black script gave way to a Queen's elegant signature near the bottom.

She turned the contract to him for his perusal. As Nasir read the sheets, she turned to the low table against the wall behind her desk. There were three ring boxes there, soft brown velvet on the exterior. Each one contained the ring that would mark Nasir as hers, and furthermore as one of her Triangle. They were simple gold things, broad across the top like a signet ring, with a simple design that matched the more delicate article of jewelry on the smallest finger of Dare's left hand. She picked up the box that held the First Escort's ring and set it down on the desk between them with some finality.

"When we are alone, you may call me Dare," she said. "If we are in public, it must be Darienn, unfortunately, and in formal occasions of course it will be Lady Comstock. But you know that." Sometimes Dare had a flux of the mouth. "You'll note that you won't have free access to my personal quarters and that the First Escort has separate quarters from mine. I value my privacy, Prince Vasile, it's not anything personal." She had to conceal her illness, for one thing, and for another she had to conceal her work. "Sometimes I'll have a visitor that I won't want an escort for. Williard is one of my males, but he doesn't serve. Please be kind to him, should you see him."

She nodded at the contract. "If none of that sounds objectionable, then please sign."

Nasir took the contract from Dare, reading it over carefully. There was a more lengthy pause as he perused it, this not the contract he had expected to be signing himself on for. He had a mind for these things, especially for numbers, but it was all in order. The contract was, in his opinion, more than far.

His eyes lifted from the pages to her as she spoke. Were he a different sort of man, more paranoid and suspicious, he might have assumed something off about her request of privacy, the same of not wanting an escort for some visitors, but he was not so he did not.

"Of course, Dare." As she had just said to call her that when it was just them. "I would prefer that you would refer to me as Nasir as well, unless Etiquette and Protocol dictate otherwise." A smile was given as he echoed her words. "But you know that." A mental note was made of Willard, to be kind, but it would not be an issue for him.

Nasir was kind by nature even if he was a Warlord Prince.

"I find this most agreeable," said Nasir, as a moved to sign his name in a neat script. He had not come to this expecting to find his Queen but here he was, Dare holding his leash and a signet ring to be worn on his finger.

As he finished, the papers were offered back, eyes focused on her once more. "You will likely find an influx of Vasile couriers and retinue through here, if only because I do see to some of the family affairs in the stead of my mother and grandmother. It's possible to give you a timetable of such things but I cannot account for all affairs that might come up." After all, he had not been expecting to be First Escort and he would find himself more here than on the Vasile lands.

With his signature on the bottom line of her contract, Dare felt more secure and sure of herself than she had in weeks. She absently fondled the sharp v-clip at the back of her head, feeling the cool metal against her fine and silky hair. The contract hadn't changed since the last time she'd looked at it, but she was at a loss for what to do now. She had expected to have to negotiate service days and duties, but the First Escort served similarly across all Courts, and she didn't know what her Court's idiosyncrasies would be just yet. There was nothing she could tell him that he wouldn't already know.

Instead, she rose from her desk, since the work that required it was done. "Walk with me, Nasir," she said, holding out her hand palm-down that he might walk as her escort, to her left. He acquiesced, and she led the way out of the office and through the little waiting-room. Dare paused for only a moment to tell the secretary where she would be: showing Nasir around the Queen's residence.

"You'll move here, of course," said Dare, shoes clicking against the parquet floor. The wood was polished to a high gloss, reflecting Dare and Nasir as she pushed open a door to reveal a clean, neat office. "This is your office. The Steward will be across the hall; the Master of the Guard will be to your right." The rooms smelled faintly of orange peel and something gently spicy. Dare supposed it was the cleaning oil, and reminded herself to talk to the cleaning staff about using something more astringent. The citrus was fine, but the... clove?... On a bad day, it could set her off.

They didn't stay long in the administration wing. Well, she called it a wing; it was along the back edge of the main house on the second floor, looking out over the forested grounds. "The residential wing is this way..." She descended the stairs, and led the way into the actual wing. "My room is down at the end; yours is close to mine, but you can choose whichver." She stopped there, beneath the arch, and turned to him. "I apologize if I seem pushy," she said. "This is my first Court, and I'd like to get everyone settled as much as possible."

The box that held the signet ring was vanished away, tucked into his psychic cabinet, while the ring was slid on. There had been a thought in the back of his mind, one that he ignored, that made him concerned about it not fitting but as it slid on it fit perfectly. Just another sign that this was the place he was meant to be.

Nasir fell into place at Dare's left, following her with a murmured 'of course'. The secretary was someone he had already met, their name and face already filed away. There were other people, other places, that Dare would be able to fill in those gaps.

As they walked, Dare's sense of security and sureness buoyed his own. Their bond was settling into place for him and he would not realize that he did walk just a little bit taller and straighter now than he had before. When they came to a stop in the residential wing - this one truly a wing - he was wondering which room to pick before he spoke.

"I do not find it pushy at all, Dare. I suppose it might seem so to some but I find it welcoming. Straightforward works for me." The less conflict between someone's emotional state and their words meant he did not have to worry so much about what was going on.

"I've not much with me so it will not take too long for me to settle and more likely to dive into handling any affairs that need to be taken care of that I can be of assistance with." Odd to think that he had come to take something within the First Circle, to handle accounting or something else, but here he was as First Escort. Nasir looked at Dare a moment, studying her with a small measure of scrutiny before he finally simply said what he seemed to be holding in.

"The Vasile had been quiet too long, Dare, and I want to change that. I know that this is your first Court because I was looking for such. If I am to bring changes to my family, then I want to do so where someone else is also making their first steps towards change and elevating themselves." Here Nasir paused, a soft smile given even if he looked as if he had probably said too much.

"I apologize," said Nasir in an echo of her earlier words, "if that is to forward of an admission but I am going to be your First Escort then I would prefer to be honest with you. Otherwise I will not be able to serve you properly."

It was strange and discomfiting to hear someone so new to her speaking to Dare so familiarly, but at the same time, she welcomed it. The syllables of her name sounded at home in his mouth, like he'd been made by the Mother to say them. Dare Dare Dare. Each one popped light across the base of her brain, shivering through the base of her skull, like the gold clip had a current running through it that made her straighten her spine and square her shoulders. "Of course you wouldn't have come prepared to move in," she said, waving a hand. "We're still settling in ourselves; I have more books to be brought for my personal library and my wardrobe to complete besides. Take your time, for now." That last part was said deliberately. There wouldn't always be time for taking time. She intended to schedule her Court tightly and run it like a well-oiled clock, with each cog and wheel in its place.

Dare looked at him as he spoke, echoing her own pseudo-apology for dispensing with formalities. Her whiskey-brown eyes watched him unwaveringly as she evaluated what he'd told her, processing what she could pass to the Spymaster and what she could use against those who would subdue her. As long as she didn't directly oppose Rheava Evesham, she could count on the Spymaster to not act directly against Dare's best interests. Dare was too great of an asset otherwise. She kept that status by reporting on her own Court and actions, hiding nothing except her own physical condition. She was sure the Spymaster knew about it, but still, she didn't want to speak to it.

"That's hardly forward," she said, finally. "I had wondered, you know, why it was the Vasile heir, a future titled aristocrat, would pursue a placement in my Court. I'm sure you already know that my father isn't aristo, simply connected to many of them; I assumed there must be some sort of Cymrean element to it, if I'm honest. I know there's been some turnover in Westwood recently, and no one's ever been quite sure where the Vasile loyalties lie... that I know of." She arched both of her impeccably-shaped brows. "But I assume that, beyond those ties to your family, that your loyalty is to me, and not a District in which you do not serve."

Nasir had a tendency to keep at things, to handle everything that kept at him, and hearing Dare say take your time actually made him pause for a moment and nod. She was right, of course, to tell him so. This Court would not always have a lull and the time would come when they would always be on a schedule, things running and running and running.

His head inclined, that warm smile in place, and he nodded a moment later. It was hard for him to break eye contact with her, the brown of her eyes so very close to his own but more than that there was a rightness to all of this he had never felt before. This place was meant for him and at her side was where he needed to be. That Dare felt, to him, as if she was overcome with similar feelings put him at ease more than any of her words or actions could.

He watched and listened, unable to stop the way his smile grew just a bit more as she arched her eyebrows. It did not seem to matter the nature of her question - the implications therein - because Nasir found that expression to be wonderful. His Queen was well-informed and that, of course, was something worth being proud of.

"If my loyalty was to a Cymrean element," he thought of Queen Emma Morgan but pushed it away, "then I would not be here and that would be unfortunate fate." Nasir would not have found Dare, would not have found his place and they would not have this bond that was budding. Still, there was a need in him to talk of this and clarify. She had knowledge but not all of it.

"The Vasile family is large and has been part of Westwood for generations," said Nasir, still in place at Dare's side as if it was the most natural place to be; easily falling into step and sync with her as they walked. "Even if we did not originally come from here, we've been here long enough that the blood has mixed and there are those among the Vasile who would call themselves Cymrean- My mother, in fact, would do so were it not for the edict handed down by my grandmother." A pause before he took on a serious tone of voice as he was clearly saying something said time and time again. "'These political battles have cost us too much and now it shall cost them. The Vasile will have no part anymore in affairs of the Courts of Dharo.'"

Nasir adjusted the cufflink on his sleeve, the smile on his face more somber than anything else. (The cufflinks had been his father's that bore pieces of his Summer Sky; they were worn in memory of him.

"We lost a sizeable portion of our horses due to an attack on the family land; the stables were nearly razed to the ground. I almost died myself and my mother was horribly burned ..." Eye contact was actually broke, Nasir glancing away if only because years later his body still remembered the feel of the flames. "My father died after he saved me, trying to put out the fires, and my mother burned because she tried to save him."

Releasing a breath he shook his head and looked back to her. That somber smile, so out of place on him, was smoothed away (as best he could do) and replaced with a less tense look. "Suffice to say that someone clearly had a hand in it but my grandmother will not speak of it, nor will my mother."

A small laugh escaped a heartbeat later, as he thought of something. "My grandmother may not like that your family is merely connected not true aristo. However, I find that I do not care at all about such as there is often very little she likes."
