Bidea 192- Early Autumn

To the Most Esteemed Queen of Dena Nehele,

I hope that this letter finds you in the best of spirits. My name is Maseo no Shingetsu and I write to you from the Territory of Raej, ruled by the exalted High Priest, Odji Khaldun. I am chosen by my Queen, the twice-blessed Lady Syeira Neferet and tasked with learning more of your land. I have enclosed a letter of introduction and recommendation from Lady Neferet, but I wished to reach out to you personally and introduce myself. Rumors of you courage and beauty have reached my ear. I look forward to sharing tea and hearing your personal story if you will indulge my curiosity.

Please also find enclosed a blend of my personal tea blend for relaxation. I look forward to learning more about your wonderful Territory.

Respectfully,

Lord Shingetsu

Maseo completed the letter and read it over several times. This was the eleventh revision. Only now did he consider it acceptable to send. He folded it once, placed it inside an envelope that carried a faint hint of tea leaves and mint. He rose from the desk inside of his room at the Shining Star Inn, one of Bidea’s better known hotels, and carried the letter downstairs. The innkeeper, a gray-haired Hearth Witch wearing the Yellow smiled when Maseo descended the stairs. She’d been beautiful in her younger years and Maseo focused upon that at their first meeting to secure most of the basic information about Dena Nehele.

He’d been granted no opportunity to study his new Territory prior to leaving Raej, forcing Maseo to gather his intelligence the same way he had when he arrived in Raej: interacting with the people.

Each night, he sat in the common room of the inn and listened to the conversations around him, gathering the scuttlebutt and rumors and collating them into a picture of the land that he and his companions would inhabit for the foreseeable future. He learned of Lady Rilandra Vlas and the Guilds that supported her. He learned about the Aristos who despised and defied her. Most importantly, he learned about all of the arable land in the Province of Tulzbruja, making a note of that Province for future reference.

They’d been in Bidea for just over a week when Maseo sent the letters and the gift to the Territory Court. Now they had to wait for their audience.

The lunch hour was approaching when the innkeeper knocked at Lady Moon’s room door. As she’d done for the last seven days, she advised the Healer that her “handsome Warlord fellow” awaited her in the common room downstairs. When Ji Yoon arrived, she’d find Maseo dressed in a sharp, gray suit cut in the Dena Nehelese fashion. His dark hair was bound back, now reaching just below his shoulders in the intervening months. His expression was dour, though it lightened when he laid eyes upon her. He set down the paper he’d been reading and rose to greet her and see her seated. He usually brooded upon something each day, same as he had ever since he’d gathered the members of their organization and explained that he had to leave Raej in three days.

Ji Yoon most loved adventure, but Maseo was still surprised that she’d joined him. He greeted her with all of the deference that Protocol required, waiting for her to take her seat before returning to his own.

Lady Moon, good morning. I hope your rest was pleasant.” Maseo said, leaning back in his seat.

I have reached out to the Territory Court. I expect to hear from them soon.” Maseo told the woman with gold-toned eyes.

I’d like it if you we could visit another cafe, not far from here. It’s the final one on my list before I make my decision.” Maseo said, referring to the various cafes and restaurants they’d visited since their arrival. Maseo intended to expand the reach of the White Lotus Trading Company to his center of commerce and action. While gathering information, he’d asked Ji Yoon to accompany him for various breakfasts, lunches, and dinners where they discussed a range of topics.

Few of them, however, related to Lord Shingetsu’s departure from Raej and the reasons for it.

I also located a medicine shop during my walkabout yesterday. Will you allow me to escort you there?” Maseo asked.

Ji Yoon had wanted an adventure - and an adventure was what she'd got. Her benefactor's instructions had taken her first to Raej, where she'd made contact with Maseo, and then across the sea to Dena Nehele. Each new locale was as alien as the last, nothing like the rocky, northern islands of her birth - but she'd spent long enough pent up in Tacea. More time than most people got in a lifetime. Her leaving was long overdue.

And as for Maseo... Ji Yoon wasn't certain what to make of him yet. She was familiar enough with the dealings of Aristos, of the intrigue that Tacea's highborn families played at - she'd been born to such a family herself, after all, and enjoyed all the advantages her father's status conferred - but that didn't mean she could draw anything resembling a conclusion about him. He was handsome, of course, the way most Aristos could buy with proper nutrition and regular medical care. Handsome enough that she still blushed about her ears when the innkeeper referred to him as her "handsome warlord fellow"... but handsome was no signifier of morality, or bravery, or very much else, for that matter. Only good breeding and a great deal of luck.

By the seventh day of this, she'd well resolved to put a pin in her opinions and double back to them when more information was available. He was less than half her age, thought she was approximately half his, and this entire enterprise had too many unknown factors about it. There was no room to go getting swept up in the romance of it all.

She joined him at the table, dressed in her usual manner - sturdy boots, fitted pants, and a linen tunic, her hair pulled up into a long braid. Travel suited Ji Yoon's tastes more than any ballroom. "It was - and same to you," she said, scooting her chair forward.

Her brow furrowed slightly at his itinerary - she'd hoped there would be time for breakfast, but it seemed she'd slept too late.

"An... apothecary, you mean?" she asked. "Of course I'd be happy to go. I can stock up on herbs..."

But there was a more interesting agenda item to ask about. "What's our business with the territory court?" she asked. "Stocking the royal cupboards?"

Lady Moon was an enigma that Maseo had yet to unravel in full. Pretty, even by the standards of his people, but not purely Tacean. The stories of the long-lived among their people were true, but Lady Moon was the first woman of long-lived descent that he’d ever encountered. Thus far, he’d not asked her more about her family or her life, believing that these topics were ones best left for her to broach if she ever trusted him enough. Thus far, she’d followed without complaint but he didn’t think that would last forever.

Especially not once they were embedded in the Territory Court.

Would you like to eat first? I wished to wait for you before I dined. Eating alone is depressing.” he said, a vision of Raet coming to his mind unbidden. The young Queen relished her meals and good company around the table. Vadik’s musical stylings added a certain ambience that couldn’t be duplicated elsewhere. He had yet to find anything like it in Dena Nehele. He hadn’t even taken out his violin since leaving Raej.

Here at the behest of my Queen, the one who holds my leash. Though she’d rather strangle me with it and I’d rather crack her skull like an egg.

He regretted the thought immediately and his anger burned hotter.

Maseo’s hand closed into a fist without realizing it. When he did, he forced it to open and settled his sights on Lady Moon once again. He favored her with a smile and forced himself to concentrate upon her. Her questions were valid. Maseo answered them mostly to keep himself occupied while he watched various patrons move through the area.

“Yes, an apothecary. That’s the word I sought. I’d like for you to see what herbs they possess that may be unique to this land. I must be frank with you, Lady Moon: we will remain here for the foreseeable future. The current climate in Raej has grown less welcoming in these past months. Until such time as that changes, Dena Nehele will be the breeding ground for our success.” Maseo said.

Our visit to the Territory Court will, hopefully, allow us to remain the Territory as esteemed guests. The connections made here will help the White Lotus Trading Company.” Maseo said. It was clear that his mind was focused upon the business aspect of their time here in Dena Nehele. He did not speak of himself unless asked. Even then, he somehow found a way to relate it to business. His interest in business waned only whenever he watched Ji Yoon eat, or speak, or drink. The golden-eyed lady held a strange magic all her own, one that Maseo noticed more than one Dena Nehelean male take note of.

But yes, we’ll stock the royal cupboards. The tea here is atrocious.” he said, by way of a jest.

If we can get in the door, I think they’ll beg us to stay.” he said, smiling brightly.

Ji Yoon narrowed her eyes at him, albeit briefly. She'd seen the way his fist clenched, and she wondered about it - what tension was he holding back from her? A secret motive? Or merely an opinion best left unshared? Neither one was particularly any of her business - if it mattered, she was sure to tease it out in time.

"I'm sure they'll have a wonderful assortment," she replied, smiling gamely. Tacea's volcanic soil made for fertile harvests, but she didn't doubt that Dene Nehele's weather was friendly to very different crops. "If this is going to be our new base of operations, I'd better read up on the local ailments and how to treat them."

Her stomach growled, then, and she recalled that, as lovely as the herbs were sure to be, you couldn't eat a poultice. Luckily, they had other errands to run.

"You said we need to visit one more cafe," Ji Yoon offered. "If you've an appointment to keep, we can eat there."

That, and she wanted to get a move on. Ji Yoon wasn't blind to the looks the innkeeper kept sneaking their way, as if trying to sort out what business the two Taceans had with each other. They'd been here long enough to breed curiosity, but the observation was beginning to wear on her. The more time they could spend out and about in the city today, the better.

She rose from her chair, and waited for him to do the same. "Shall we?" she suggested, inclining her head towards the door.

Maseo was glad to hear Ji Yoon taking it all of this in stride. He wondered, at various times during their association, if she was faking the enthusiasm and zest for life she seemed to have. Even Maseo, who enjoyed the finer comforts in life and some of its hedonistic pleasures, didn’t hold the optimism that Ji Yoon seemed to have. She wanted to get a move on and he liked her initiative. He’d have waited for her to eat, but she was likely to enjoy the food at the place they were headed to next.

We shall.” he said, rising from his seat. They headed for the door and Maseo held it open for her, sweeping the general area with his dual-wave of energy from his jewels. On the street, he looked both left and right, and then took the extra of casting his gaze upward. Many of the buildings in this area of the city were not especially high, but Maseo saw a couple of areas where an enterprising spy or killer could ambush someone. Maseo thought about these things more than most, considering that the Izayoi were not finished with him, nor he with them, by a long shot.

They headed down the cobblestone streets, making a right at the first corner they came down and heading deeper into Bidea proper. They drew glances from the natives, with their blue eyes and curious stares, though no one stepped toward them. Maseo unwound a bit of his Seduction Craft, heightening his exotic looks by just a touch, hoping to make himself just a bit more memorable for the women he passed. When his business finally took off, they’d remember the Tacean and, perhaps, compel their husband and lovers to frequent his shop. The ground work for a successful business began long before the doors ever opened or the shelves were stocked.

He needed to stand out from his competitors. Superior product. Superior results.

He reminded himself to write that down later.

If his Seduction Craft granted Ji Yoon any sense of calm or relaxation, Maseo did not appear to notice.

They arrived at the Diana’s Cakes and Pastries, a small, single-level stone building in an area of Bidea that had seen better days. A tailor shop, Paolo’s, sat beside the cafe and a unpolished tables sat outside the door. Maseo opened the door to the establishment and allowed Ji Yoon to enter.

The dark hardwood floors would need polishing. The brick interior would need some redoing and Maseo did not like the placement of the Witchlamps here. The one positive he’d found was the scent of apples, likely some kind of tart, filled the air. Yet this place was nearly empty.

The energy in this place is wrong.” he murmured, ignoring the stares of the other two patrons inside, a pair of older gentlemen engaged in a game of chess. One of them, a gray-haired Prince wearing the Rose regarded Maseo and Ji Yoon with a raised brow. Maseo hoped that Ji Yoon took it well. He was used to being stared at for being different.

You looking for something, Warlord?” the man asked, his tone suspicious.

Maseo turned to the Prince and bowed, careful to lower himself to the precise angle required to show respect, but no further.

Yes, Prince. I would like to speak with the owner of this esteemed establishment. I have a business proposition to discuss.” Maseo said.

The man’s gaze flickered between Maseo and Ji Yoon, briefly, before he turned his head to the left.

DIANA! Get out here! There’s a couple of foreigners who want a pastry or something.

Only Ji Yoon saw Maseo’s shoulders tense slightly at the Prince’s words. She knew his dislike of the undisciplined, the crass, and the uncivilized. He avoided, for now, dealing with the man as he might have back home.

A older woman with dark brown hair hobbled into the main area from the back, Yellow Jewel displayed upon her ring finger. Her eyes set upon Maseo and Ji Yoon, but they focused on Maseo with a bit more ease.

Welcome to Diana’s.” the Witch said, smiling at both of them. “What can I get you?

Ji Yoon felt the change in the air as she walked at Maseo's side, his craft suggestion that she put herself at ease. To her Blood Opal, the spell was obvious, like someone at a party who'd had too heavy a hand with their cologne. She doubted she was his intended target - more likely, he was after the women passing by, light-jewels and blood and landen who would remember the foreigner with the je ne sais quois.

Well, she thought, smiling wryly. He certainly knows how to sell himself.

They hadn't talked much about their histories. She wondered if he had geisha training in his repertoire.

She agreed with his assessment about the shop. Looking around, it was clear that they were well off the main thoroughfare. The air tasted like apples, yes, but it also felt stale - the same people day after day, with few visitors or variation. She was hardly a businesswoman herself, but still, the question was begged - how did this place stay open?

Not to mention the customer service left... something to be desired. The witch seemed nice enough - though Ji Yoon noticed how her attention went more easily to Maseo than to her. Was he still crafting?

There was only one way to interpret his silence at the question - he wanted her to place their order.

Ji Yoon stepped forward, an easy smile coming to her face. "Could we have two of your apple tarts, please?" she asked. Their prospects here seemed dodgy, but whatever was perfuming the air would be their safest bet. "And I believe my associate would like to see you tea selection..."

She made a small gesture towards Maseo.

"Which importer do you stock?" she added, her voice inquisitive. There was no need to use craft - she hoped her manners would do enough to put the witch at ease.

Ji Yoon handled the ordering and Maseo left her to it, still taking in the decor. He’d ended the Crafting shortly after their arrival, but he’d wanted to see how Ji Yoon interact with the locals once more. He'd have much more to say later. There were a number of things he’d change about the place, but that would be a poor lead-in to such a conversation. He found little personal touches through the shop, like bead wear and small toys that once hinted at this shop being a more active and bustling place.

Ji Yoon ordered the apple tarts and Maseo returned his attention to the women, even as he spared a glance for the two men playing their game. He clasped his hands before him focused upon his breathing to clear his mind and relax.

Oh, my tea selection is very limited. My original importer, Bogdan’s, usually gets their product from Lesser Caecian, but there’s been some issue there since Lady Grey passed away. Tulzbruja’s having some issues in general. Florian’s went out of business last year. They say he angered an Aristo and that said Aristo hired the Myos Guild to correct the problem.” the Witch said, her tone and expression growing somber. Maseo nodded in understanding, filing away the information for later.

May I ask your name, Lady? I’d like to discuss your tea situation and perhaps a few other items regarding your shop, if you’re so inclined.” Maseo said. The woman smiled and introduced herself as Lady Diana Florescu, owner of the shop.

I have a policy of no business discussion before eating. Please have a seat and I’ll get you both taken care of.” Lady Florescu said, now moving with some spring to her step. With little else to do but wait, he lead Lady Moon to a table and pulled out her chair for her, waiting until she was seated before taking his own.

He looked to Ji Yoon.

Well, there is opportunity here. I’ve heard different versions of the same story from a few of the other shops we’ve visited. And a few of the locals who aren’t afraid to talk once they’ve had a few drinks to loosen their tongues.” Maseo said.

I think this location has potential.” Maseo said, looking around once more.

Ji Yoon took the offered seat, giving Maseo a polite nod as she did so. His manners certainly lent credence to her geisha theory. Now wasn't the time to bring that up, but she was sure she'd have an opportunity if their arrangement continued. "I think so, too," she agreed, resting her hands loosely on the table.

She leaned in, dropping her voice as to not make their conversation too conspicuous as Diana bustled around behind the counter - though no business talk before food didn't apply between the two of them, she didn't want to give the proprietess any reason to dislike them. "Between you and me," she said quietly, but with a wry smile, "it sounds like we've walked into a market that's wide open."

Business wasn't her thing, but it didn't take a genius to see a power vacuum.

Diana returned, briefly, to drop off their plates, and Ji Yoon watched her disappear back into the kitchen before gingerly picking up her fork.

"What do you mean about the location?" she asked, slicing her tart into pieces. "I thought we were courting customers. Why would the location's potential be of any concern to us?"

He'd held something back from her, she thought, and considered - not for the first time this week - that she ought to have pried more information out of her contact before chasing a stranger halfway across the world, but all things considered, it probably wasn't anything dastardly.

And if it was...

Well, this far from home, there was no danger of harming her family name, and she'd already had quite enough quiet living as far as she was concerned, so she wasn't actually sure that she minded.

She popped a bite of apple tart into her mouth and chewed, thoughtfully, for what was probably an overly long time. It was good - more spice than sweetness.  "I think I see how they stay in business," she remarked, meeting Maseo's eyes.

The gold tone of her eyes held mysteries that he would unravel, one way or another.

Ji Yoon spoke of the market being wide open and Maseo smiled in agreement and recognition of the situation. He’d not expected this kind of good fortune in their early days within Dena Nehele, but he would not let it slip through his fingers. He had product and this place seemed a good spot to begin. He’d not explained this part of the plan to Ji Yoon and he hoped that she didn’t take offense at not being included. Despite their traveling together, Maseo was not yet sure how much he could trust her. Their benefactor was still unknown to him and always seemed to know what he was doing, with whom, and when. He did not think that would change now that he was in Dena Nehele, rather than Raej, but it did not hurt to be careful.

I speak of the location because I want to open a shop that you and I will work from. Between your work ethic and the superior product that he we bring with us, we have a chance at creating a place for ourselves within Dena Nehele.” Maseo said, quieting as the tarts were brought in. He took a bite of the tart and chewed, deep in thought.

Then he stared at the tart. It was one of the best he’d ever had.

This tart plus a good tea would give us an edge on the market.” Maseo said, taking another bite of the tart. He finished two more before he looked to Ji Yoon once more.

But there are lot of other businesses in this area that could probably use the increase in foot traffic.” Maseo said.

The longer he considered it, the better he felt. He didn’t care if he ever saw Raej again. Syeira could keep her Red Jeweled lapdog Priestess. Raet could have Nailah’s overly-kind and extremely stupid little brother. Maseo didn’t give a damn. He’d make so much money and improve himself so much that Syeira would have no choice but to deal with him, rather than look down her masked little nose at him like he was scum at the bottom of her shoe.

Maseo realized, just then, that he’d driveh his fork through the tart so hard that he’d cracked the plate. He relaxed, took one deep breath, released it, and took another. Release. Breathe. Release. Breathe.

Do not let them draw you from the path. That was another life.

This is your life now.

Anyway, that is why the location matters. We want people to buy our wares, don’t we?” he asked, setting down his fork. He wasn’t very hungry anymore. He would let Ji Yoon finish hers before he attempted to flag down Diana and speak with her once more.

Ji Yoon was very slightly taken aback - surely, her benefactor had not recruited her away from Tacea and everything she knew to run a cafe. She tried not to let her surprise show on her face, but wasn't sure she'd clamped down on it quickly enough as she turned the idea over in her mind. There had to be another angle, she was sure of it - but what?

She resolved to ask later - it wasn't a conversation to be had in public.

"Of course," she replied, nodding, voice measured. "An investment. I understand." But not... really. What did he mean, her work ethic? She was a healer, and a highly accomplished one at that - not some shop witch.

There was a sudden sound of snapping pottery, then, and Ji Yoon jumped slightly in her chair. Looking over, she saw that Maseo had broken his plate.

"That will hardly endear us to Ms. Florescu," she said, smiling gently as she swapped their plates. Porcelain was hardly the same as flesh, but mending was mending. There were always some similarities. She pressed the two halves back together and, with a delicate wave of her hand, reunited them with nary a crack to be seen.

"Good as new," said Ji Yoon brightly, looking up. There was a tension in his body language, she thought, that did not match their present circumstances, and though she was hardly a suspicious person by nature... he was giving her plenty of reasons to be.

And as for the location, well, this was hardly the high street - but she'd already decided he was not being entirely truthful with his motives. With that in mind, what was the harm in seeing how this all played out?

Maseo’s anger had gotten away from him once more. Every time he thought of Syeira, he wanted to hurt something. Hurt someone. The idea of seeing her again chilled his blood even as it warmed his heart. The Red Queen didn’t care if he lived or died. To her, he was just some dirty foreigner that she could order about as the mood suited her for the amusement of her Court. His life amounted to nothing in her eyes, so it was better that he was here, now, and living as best he could.

That did not excuse his lapse in discipline with Ji Yoon.

She took the plate and mended it and Maseo inclined his head in gratitude and respect for her action. The mask had slipped, but he was recovering. He couldn’t afford to do that again. He spared a glance around the room, saw that the Prince and his chess partner were watching them.

I apologize for that lapse, Lady Moon. Thank you for your quick thinking.” Maseo said, taking a deep breath.

Lady Diana returned after several minutes, bringing with her a chair to sit down at their table. Maseo made some polite small talk with her, complimenting the tart. Diana spoke of how it was her grandmother’s recipe, handed down over several generations. Maseo nodded in understanding. It was good to know that this land respected some form of tradition. The discussion moved slowly into the subject of Diana’s tea supply and how the shop had once been known for its beverages as well.

This area was bustling once. This shop was always filled with people, the type who worked while they ate but still enjoyed the meal. The shops closer to the palace are taking advantage of their closeness to the seat of power, just like the Aristos. Most of their Hearth Witches think that tea is just bags and hot water.” Diana said, barely able to keep the disgust and annoyance from her tone.

In the end, Maseo convinced Diana to agree to allow the White Lotus Trading Company to become her new supplier of tea, herbs, and confections. He put the older woman at ease by explaining his respect for tradition and suggesting a partnership between herself and the White Lotus. The older woman was hesitant at first, asking a number of questions about how closely they’d work together. Diana wanted time to visit her family in Lesser Caecian, something she’d been able to do over the last few years while keeping this place going.

Family is extremely important to us, Lady Florescu. I’m certain that we can come to an agreement that will allow you the time to see your family and still maintain your legacy.” Maseo said.

When Diana was satisfied, she agreed to contact a friend who would review the contracts that Maseo would have drawn up to cement their deal. A few more customers trickled in, along with a young Warlord and Hearth Witch who appeared to be her employees, so she excused herself to return to work. Maseo agreed to return in two days’ time with the requested forms, which Diana agreed to.

When she stepped away, Maseo looked to Ji Yoon.

Would you like to go, Lady Moon? I’d like to discuss something with you today, if you’re inclined.

Whatever momentary lapse in composure Maseo had had, he'd managed to rein it in by the time Diana came back, and Ji Yoon paid it no more mind through the ensuing conversation. Talkative as she normally was, she managed to keep herself mostly quiet while Maseo did... whatever it was he had planned. From where she was seated, it seemed to go well.

When Maseo finally addressed her once more, Ji Yoon nodded. "Yes," she said, rising to her feet. "I see no reason to tie up this table any longer."

They made their way back out to the street, where Ji Yoon tried to judge the location once more, this time with... whatever Maseo was considering when he looked at it. Were their points of view really so different - or was his optimism a show? What was his angle? To her, it still looked shabby. Not nearly a slum, but... Hardly somewhere people went out of their way to visit.

But perhaps he was right, and it would gentrify with a little helping along.

When they'd gone a fair distance from the shop, she turned to him and asked, "What did you need to talk about?"

She had questions of her own, of course - but she'd let him begin. Perhaps he'd clear some things up on his own. But one thing still nagged at her, something she couldn't hold back--

"Please tell me we're not only here to run a tea shop," she blurted. It just didn't make sense!!! She'd been recruited for her skills as a healer - had she really crossed the sea to be a salesclerk? A waitress? That couldn't be the case. It was impossible.

She looked expectantly towards Maseo, eyebrows raised, and waited.

Maseo started counting.

He counted the steps from their table to the door. He counted the seconds that the Prince inside the shop stared at them, stared after them, as they left the establishment. He counted the breaths and heartbeats between the last thing he’d said and the next time he would speak. Most importantly, he counted the seconds until Lady Moon finally spoke up and demanded to know what he wanted to discuss.

What did you need to talk about?

He’d started to say something else, but she spoke again. How long had she been waiting to ask that? At least probably since he’d expressed interest in the building. Maseo couldn’t help the smile on his lips, even as he wondered if he was making a mistake. Still, he had to trust her as he’d trusted Tasiwara and Orihime. He could ask for her trust without extending any of his own, but that wouldn’t give her cause to help him.

The aural shield slid into place around them, powered by his Opal, to keep their conversation private.

No, Lady Moon, you are not here to run a tea shop. Nor am I. We'll find people to help with that while we do the important work. I hope that you’ll take a leading role in clinic I'm opening once the funding is available. Meanwhile, we'll establish ourselves within the Territory Court and build the relationships needed to get both the tea shop and the clinic off the ground. They will always see us as outsiders. They'll leave us be as long as they don't consider us threats to their way of life.” Maseo said.

The larger plan is about gaining influence that will protect us from reprisals. I’ve made some influential enemies over the years, Lady Moon. I expect to make more in the near future. One of those enemies is the reason I left Raej.” Maseo said, his pace slowing to a leisurely stroll.

My Raejian operation will remain in the capable hands of Prince Tashiwara and Lady Orihime. You and I are focusing on the expansion of the White Lotus Trading Company. I have someone moving us into Chaillot. Whether or not the Rebellion there succeeds, the White Lotus help the island restore its economy once that conflict is over. Dhemlan is next as soon as I find an agent willing to go there.” Maseo said.

Dena Nehele, however, borders four different Territories. Shalador, to our east, holds hundreds, maybe thousands, of herbs and medicinal plants that most of Terreille has never seen. You will help me find them and make them useful. Dena Nehele will look to us for needs that their own people aren't filling and maybe we'll let them start growing the plants of their own accord.” Maseo said.

Tacea benefits from the connections we make. The borders were closed for so long that people forgot we existed. Even the long-lived haven't accounted for us. Askavi lies to the south and that's another market I want to reach into when the time comes. The White Lotus Trading Company will reach from one sea to the other, connecting the commerce between the Territories as much as possible.

If we grow wealthy in the meantime, so much the better.
” Maseo said, much of the initial plan outlined his mind. Once the money was available, he could buy the best protection that Dena Nehele could offer. So long as he didn't make enemies of these people, the world was still open to him.

I haven't been open about my motives or my history and you've been patient. I hope this helps. Perhaps you'll return the favor by telling me of yourself.” Maseo said. It wasn't a question, yet he didn't assume that she'd return the favor. He'd stated what he wanted, for the moment.

He would let her choose how they moved forward.

Ji Yoon nodded along with his explanation, finding it a likely story. She retained a certain wariness - there was much they still had to learn about each other - but it was at least a small reassurance to know that this was all part of a much grande master plan in Maseo's mind, and that his ambitions extended beyond the horrifyingly (and mind-numbingly) domestic.

This matched much better with his worldly persona, she thought, satisfied. The fact that he'd answered her question bolstered her confidence in their... could it be called a partnership? She wasn't sure she'd go so far. Partnership implied a certain equality, after all, and she wasn't certain they'd arrived at that point yet. But maybe, if he kept her in the loop, and if she could prove how much value she brought to this enterprise...

They'd only been at this a week. There was time yet, she decided, to adjust their dynamic.

"Good," she said, finally, a wry look in her eye. "I was worried for a moment that you'd lost your ambition."

Building a trade empire... now there was a worthwhile endeavor, and one so different than anything she'd ever dreamed of doing in the previous stage of her life! Truly, Ji Yoon had been given a gift, a chance to start over while the prime of her life was just starting.

She assumed as they walked that they were headed towards the apothecary he'd lured her out the door with promises of. And then, the conversation turned to her life, and... Ji Yoon had never liked to talk about herself, and she wasn't sure how much she wanted to share with this handsome stranger, but honesty demanded honesty if such a thing was going to become a habit.

"Of course," she answered. "As you have likely figured, my mother was Hanwa, and I was raised among her people. She was a blacksmith, but I have absolutely no talent for that craft. I'm hopeless at it. Really."

She'd lost most of her adolescent callouses. Time healed what magic couldn't.

"My father is a foreigner to Tacea," she continued, though she did not intend to say where from - or who. Seung Silvo Corro's name carried a great deal of weight, and she didn't want the burden.  "Though he's done well for himself. Married well. Made certain my siblings and I had the finest educations money and influence can buy. You know how the noble houses are..."

Hopefully, she thought, that would be enough to satisfy his curiosity for now.

Maseo sensed that the explanation of his plan brought some comfort to Ji Yoon, assuring her that her talents wouldn’t be wasted on something trivial. He didn’t know what their benefactor had told her about this entire enterprise, but Maseo planned to see it through and make every person and resource count. It also helped that Ji Yoon wanted to use her skills as a Healer to help someone, even if it wasn’t the people Tacea or Raej. She was, in effect, his most valuable weapon in this enterprise. He was without Caste and, therefore, just another businessman with designs in Dena Nehele. The area around him would eventually support not just greater business for Dena Nehele, but a refuge for other Taceans who came to mainland Terreille seeking greater opportunities.

Ji Yoon’s skill as a Healer would prove, over time, that their intentions were positive.

Their surface intentions, at least.

The Lotus must bloom.

Lady Moon, I assure you that my ambition hasn’t suffered. If nothing else, it’s sharper now that it’s ever been. Our Trading Company will even blunt the lethality of Eyrien temper, in time. Before we left Raej, I had the good fortune to meet a Landen farmer from Askavi. I think he’ll eventually provide us a way into that Territory. I also encountered a Thrice-Blessed Dhemlani woman who has connections to the leaders of that land.

Hayll will be more difficult to approach, given their disdain for the short-lived. That will change, in time, though.
” Maseo said.

They walked on, headed to the apothecary for Ji Yoon. Unknown to her, he’d already an agreement with said apothecary to distribute product and assist with some side projects that Maseo had in mind. He needed a Black Widow of deep skill to aid him in this endeavor, but it would happen. Maseo would find someone soon enough.

Ji Yoon explained that her mother was Hanwa and Maseo nodded in understanding. His interest was piqued when she mentioned her father being a foreigner, though he did not react to the news at all. The color of her eyes said as much, but Maseo was glad to hear confirmation. He’d heard stories of a foreigner living in Tacea for sometime, but the man in question was more myth than reality. Maseo had not met him, but wondered what said foreigner thought of Tacea’s culture.

Yes, I understand how the noble houses are.” Maseo said, agreeing with her. When she did not speak further, he supposed that was all the information he’d receive for now. That was fine. They’d reach the apothecary’s shop and he would let Ji Yoon precede him into the shop, taking up a position near the door while she looked about. He needed time refine his plan and determine what he’d say to the Territory Queen when he finally met her.

He gave a nod of greeting to the owner of the shop, a woman in her thirties, situated behind the counter. Maseo said nothing for the moment, letting Ji Yoon look around the shop while Maseo’s eye was caught by a particular herb called Redwine. Filing away that info, he let his eyes wander over the Healer’s form once more, appreciating her beauty. She was one of a few Tacean women whose company he enjoyed over the last few years and it was decidedly different from the company of the Raejian women he’d known.

She wasn’t a savage, after all.

Ji Yoon was not looking at him as they walked, but she narrowed her eyes ever so slightly at the mention of her father's homeland. She had made up her mind not to reveal her heritage or her age too soon into this endeavor - but she could only fathom whether he'd already begun to put things together for himself. (It was her eyes that gave her away, she thought - too dark to be pure-blooded, but more gold than brown.) It certainly sounded as though he might have.

"I have no doubt we'll find a solution when the time is right," she said, eyes on the architecture.

Of course, that was only guesswork - who was to say whether the Dhemlanis' disdain for the short-lived extended to half-breeds like herself? Ji Yoon had never set foot there, and her father seldom spoke of it. He'd gone native in Tacea, wrapped up in the territory's easygoing pace and rigid manners.

They arrived at the apothecary, and Ji Yoon followed Maseo in to the cool, softly-lit shop. There was a loamy, herbal scent in the air - as much, she thought, from the bins of mushrooms against the wall as from the bundles of drying herbs hung from the rafters. She echoed Maseo's manners, nodding to the owner, and then turned her attention to the bins and barrels of dried herbs at the center of the shop, all priced neatly by the pound.

"The prices are all different from what I'm used to," she said, brow furrowing as she scanned the rows. There were a few Tacean staples that seemed exorbitant - maybe she could find a local substitute.

She turned back towards Maseo - he'd been watching her, she realized, but wasn't sure why.

"How soon do you intend for me to begin work?" she asked. "I'll need to rebuild my kit." She would need a selection of common herbs with practical applications - Willow. Ginger. Ginseng. Reishi. Feverfew. Valerian. Jasmine. Star Anise. Witch Hazel...

And, of course, if he wanted her to prepare for anything specialized, he'd need to ask for it. Otherwise, she'd be ready for the usual - fevers. Sprains. Breaks. Burns. Women's Complaints ranging from common to particularly delicate and discrete.

She turned towards the witch behind the counter. "Do you dry and grind all your own herbs?" she asked, "or do some come to you already processed?" One could not be too careful about quality - she'd heard too many stories of turmeric cut with sawdust to take risks with her supply. Hopefully Maseo would not take her questioning as an insult - he'd brought her here, after all.

The witch behind the counter introduced herself as Raluca and smiled at the question posed to her.

Yes, I do, Lady. I prefer to do so in order to make sure it’s done properly. I hope that’s not an issue?” the witch said, he expression hopeful.

Maseo had been looking at Ji Yoon, but when he noticed her noticing him, he found another place to direct his attention, though a small smile remained on his lips when he did. He did not look offended or otherwise put-off by Ji Yoon’s questions for the witch. He would have been more surprised if his companion had asked no questions or shown any curiosity about the shop’s practices.

He took spared a glance to the street outside, knowing that foot traffic in this area of the city tended to pick up after lunch. Once this errand was complete, their day consisted of nothing else, save waiting for the Territory Queen to respond to his request for an audience.

Someone was watching them.

Maseo’s turned to face the door in full and saw the Prince from Diana’s watching the apothecary shop from across the street. Maseo’s eyes narrowed as he stared he Prince down. Maseo wanted to step outside and confront him, as why the man was following them. He nearly did.

But stepping outside would leave Ji Yoon undefended, especially if he’d brought company. Something told him that the savages here did not understand the concept of a duel or test of skill. Drawing him away from Ji Yoon would be a prelude to their assault of a Healer. He did not believe Ji Yoon defenseless, but divide and conquer was an effective tactic for a reason.

Dena Nehele murdered its Queens. Maseo had no reason to believe that they held any other female Caste as sacred.

Maseo stepped away from the door and walked over to Ji Yoon.

Lady Moon, we have a visitor outside. The Prince from Lady Diana’s shop. He’s watching the entrance. I think it would be best to conclude our business and head back to our lodgings. I cannot tell thus far if he’s just here to talk or here to make a point with a few friends.” Maseo said.

Maseo considered that this matter could still be resolved with words, but he didn’t think it likely.

And today held such promise.

"No, no, it's not," Ji Yoon assured the witch. "That's exactly what I was hoping you would say." Her focus shifted to a display behind the counter - bottles and vials of essential oils and extracts. She narrowed her eyes, reading the labels.

"Can you get fresh Belladonna this time of year? Or pressed Lobelia blossoms?" she asked, but before Raluca could answer, Maseo rejoined them with bad news. Ji Yoon tried not to let worry show on her face - but the innkeeper had warned her about what danger her caste might expose her to here. Later, she'd need to speak to Maseo about retaining her a proper healer escort, someone who wore Jewels darker than her own. She wouldn't be able to begin clinic work without one.

"I think," she said measuredly, turning towards him, "that it would be best to return to the inn and discuss our timetable for this endeavor. If I'm not beginning work immediately, then there's no need for me to buy supplies today. We can come back when there's time to linger."

She cast a long glance out towards the street, where the Prince stood, watching. She hadn't liked the looks he'd given them at the bakery, and she liked him even less now.

"We'll be back in a few days time for a proper supply run," she assured Raluca. "And now, I hate to impose, but is there a back entrance we could use? We're trying not to cause trouble."

The witch paled and nodded before lifting a section of the countertop. "Follow me," she said, and led the pair of Taceans out into the alley.

When she had vanished back into the shop, Ji Yoon turned to Maseo. "We'd better go," she said. "Do you think it's safe to go back to Diana's later on, or should we abandon that deal?"

Maseo would not be pushed out of Dena Nehele. He was prepared to drench the earth of this land in blood before he was once more pushed out of another Territory. He’d only left Raej because it was easier than being near a Queen who despised him and another who refused to stand up to her. Thinking about it now made Maseo itch to summon his sword and step outside to kill the Prince who’d followed them here as a message to him and his cohorts.

He would not be moved.

Yes, it’s best that we return to the inn. We’ll determine our course of action there. But Lady Moon, we are not abandoning any deals and we will not be intimidated or bullied.” Maseo said, returning Ji Yoon’s measured gaze with one of his own. She would need an escort who could defend her at will and see her safely from place to place during her errands and endeavors.

Once they were in the alley, Maseo guided Ji Yoon down a few turns with an ease that belied a knowledge of the area deeper than short time that they’d been Bidea. They arrived at the rear door to the inn a few minutes after they left the apothecary, though Maseo checked the common room to make sure that they weren’t walking into an unwelcome gathering. Finding no one out of the ordinary, Maseo returned to Ji Yoon.

I would like you to head upstairs, Lady Moon. I will make sure that we are safe.” Maseo said.

He turned, readying himself to escort her upstairs when the Innkeeper appeared around a corner.

Good afternoon, Lord and Lady. Lord Shingetsu, a letter arrived for you today. Delivered by a well-dressed man from the Court, I think.” she said.

I’ll bring it to you.” she said. When Maseo nodded, she headed for the lobby.

I hope this is good news.” Maseo murmured.

The innkeeper returned and handed Maseo an envelope made of fine paper, bearing the Territory Seal. Maseo looked to Ji Yoon, then cracked the seal and opened the letter.

Lord Maseo Shingetsu,
While that was a lovely introduction with an awful lot of words, it's Riley. Just Riley. If you are actually able to honor my preference here, you will be further ahead than half my Court. Which would be probably the best gift you could bring me, as you sound the kind to try to bring gifts.

Feel free to bring tea, too. While you're in for something of a challenge due to my preference for coffee, I invite you to try to lure me to your side. 'Night knows one of my males has been attempting to for years. He is an avid tea drinker and will be thrilled to have someone to discuss tea with, and likely even more thrilled to have someone to drink it with.

I know of your Queen. Her marriage to Odji's nephew and heir was quite the affair a few years ago. Matters here in Dena Nehele did not allow me to attend, but I did hear about it in detail from my delegation that did. Her letter of introduction is most proper. I hope it won't bother you overly much that I'm not one to stand on ceremony. Dena Nehele is a hard land. The only thing flowery about me grows in the garden under my care.

You are not the first person to be arriving from a foreign land right now. You are, however, the most polite so far. Normally that's not something I find virtue in, but right now, Maseo, it's pretty damn refreshing. I'm looking forward to seeing what that looks like in person.

Let me know when you arrive in Bidea and someone will schedule a meeting for me with you. Wish I could say it would be me, but apparently my schedule has been run away with by the overly capable hands of my beloved Triangle.

May Witchblood never touch you and yours-
Riley, aka The Most Esteemed Queen of Dena Nehele

The walk back to the inn was tense but uneventful, and Ji Yoon spent it mulling over whether she'd done wrong by him by suggesting they leave and avoid confrontation. She'd asked an innocent enough question in wondering whether their deal with Diana's was worth keeping - and clearly, to him, it was. Sometimes you had to stand tall and show your strength.

Easy enough for a man without a caste to say.

But what did she know, anyway?

Their trip out into the city had been productive in more ways than one, for it had given the local Queen time to return their letter. As Maseo opened the envelope and unfolded its contents, Ji Yoon stepped in closer - close enough that their arms touched - and, after a quick glance to him that seemed to ask for permission, turned her attention to the letter in his hands, reading it silently in time with him.

After a long moment, she said, "Well, she's... amiable."

Not to mention unorthodox, she thought, but that frankness likely had a place here. The prevailing manners in Dena Nehele were so unlike those in Tacea. Perhaps that would be a boon to Maseo, given his track record with Queens thus far.

"She looks to have given us very clear instructions on how to win her favor," Ji Yoon added, stepping away from him. She'd gotten a good whiff of his soap and it had sent her head spinning. "Did you still want me to wait for you upstairs, or...?"

Maseo read the letter three times.

Riley.

Just Riley.

Ji Yoon would see the confusion writ large on his face.

Amiable, indeed. If I did not know that she was the Queen of Dena Nehele, I wouldn't have taken the writer of this letter for a Queen. She’s not nearly as formal as mi--” Maseo paused, taking a deep breath.

She’s not as formal as some Queens that I have known.” he said, passing Ji Yoon the letter in case she wanted to read it further. A Tacean Queen would never be so direct, so informal as this. Maseo was both wary and intrigued, wondering if this was how Riley treated all courtiers who visited her lands. He needed to learn more about Dena Nehele now, more than the basics he’d brushed up on during the trip here. He wished Francois was here to answer more questions.

I want you to come with me. We will acknowledge our receipt of Lady Riley’s letter in person, mostly because I want to see what our new friends will do if they believe we have connections to the Territory Court. You'll also be instrumental in convincing Lady Vlas and her Court of the need for this clinic. Perhaps she can even suggest a proper escort for you.” Maseo said, recognizing that his ability to protect Ji Yoon would be compromised if he encountered anyone with Jewels darker than his own.

He hated leaving her safety in the hands of foreigners, but until Maseo found trustworthy retainers in Dena Nehele, he couldn’t take chances with Ji Yoon’s life or jewels. Especially not in a place where killing and breaking Queens went seemingly unpunished.

Their benefactor would take that poorly.

I’m ready to go when you are.” Maseo said.

"Certainly not by half," agreed Ji Yoon, taking the letter and looking it over again. This Riley woman didn't align with any of her perceptions of what a Queen should be (though those were very heavily influenced by her sisters and by Yuki, all proper Tacean queens).

She frowned briefly at what certainly sounded like a reference to his Queen, and then let the moment pass. It had obviously been a slip, some kind of sore subject. Perhaps he'd open up to her in time - or not. Just another thing he was holding back from her. She'd find a way to survive (it would not be difficult).

"Of course," she demurred, and folded the letter before handing it back to him, her interest in it fully sated. "Running a clinic isn't free," she suggested. "Perhaps if we can convince her of the need, as you've said, she can also be persuaded to invest in the health of her populace? A significant, recurring donation would keep costs for our patients down..."

She doubted Riley would take much convincing. Ji Yoon had only a cursory understanding of the current climate in Dena Nehele, but she knew that both her caste and her Blood Opal made her a rarity. And then there was her hidden ace - the lifespan she was so hesitant to acknowledge until she really needed to. Most Healers of her experience would be nearing retirement, while Ji Yoon was as young and spry as she'd been six decades ago.

And as for finding an escort... she'd had the same thought exactly, but now that he'd brought it up saw no reason not to let Maseo think he'd come up with it. She wouldn't need to intervene until he had candidates to field. Otherwise, she decided right then, her energy was better spent elsewhere. For example, on all the other logistics of establishing a clinic.

"Well then," said Ji Yoon. "After you, Lord Shingetsu. Lead the way."
