With the full force of the Guilds at her back, Rilandra Vlas seized the Territory Throne of Dena Nehele. The common born Province Queen now owes allegiance to the Master of the Guilds for his assistance in both securing the throne and securing Darcia Glassade's continual safety. Trapped between the demands of the Guilds and the demands of the Aristos, Riley is struggling to rule, finding the palace more of a cage than she could have dreamed possible.

Appearance

Play By: Jessica Lowndes

Distinguishing Features:  Sorinna's hair and complexion favor her long-lived mother, with dark hair and golden skin that is a few shades lighter than the Dhemlani normal. She is tall and willowy with scrapes, chipped nails, and healed-over cuts on her hands from gardening. Her most notable feature is green eyes, flecked with gold.

Personality

Personality:

At first glance, Sorinna Roman is considered unapproachable and distant by many, seemingly lacking the charisma a Queen requires to draw people to her side. Closer inspection, however, shows that this distance is a check against her natural desire to latch on to others and devote herself to their welfare. Death took her father from her at a young age, and so Sorinna values every person that comes into her life because she fears that they’ll be ripped away a moment’s notice. If she can balm the wounds of her friends, her males, or her adopted family, she’ll do so without hesitation. She’s been warned that this is a weakness that others can, and will, exploit but Sorinna would rather be criticized for having too much compassion than  none at all.

This paints her as a naive idealist and Sorinna accepts that branding with pride. Despite the initial trauma of her childhood, she chooses not be defined by what she’s lost and instead strives to live up to the ideals and models of the Queens of old, as well as the example of her mentor, Rilandra Vlas...with a few minor tweaks to avoid some of Riley’s pitfalls.

Like her mentor, Sorinna hates the duplicity that accompanies the intrigues and politics of Dena Nehele. Unable to change it, she believes the better angle is to try to reach the people beneath those masks and find where they have common ground and work from there. This leads Sorinna to the belief that even the Aristos, manipulators that they are, can be reasoned with and even dealt honestly. She loves Riley beyond reason, but feels that her mentor’s approach to dealing with the Aristos, prodding and provoking them at every turn, is a bad long-term strategy.

If Sorinna hates anything, it’s the Guilds of Dena Nehele and their control who lives and dies, who rises and falls within the Territory. Riley’s dealings with them are a source of deep fear for Sorinna, not just because she knows that they can’t be trusted long-term to hold up their end of the bargain (their loyalty belongs to money alone), but because it was one of their number that butchered her father and left her an orphan. No one, be they Aristo, Queen, or commoner, is safe from the Guilds and their pervasive influence in Dena Nehele. Sorinna stays up at night wondering when they’ll break their word and kill Riley before declaring open season Queens across the Territory once more.

Likes:
  • 1. Personal Responsibility: “Own your shit.

Sorinna lost her father when she was eight years old and she still wakes up screaming some nights. She doesn’t like the sight of blood and she doesn’t like being alone if she can avoid it. But she still tours the farms and slaughterhouses where food is made and accepts that she can’t be coddled every minute of every day. Too many people justify shitty behavior with sob stories about how their were hurt, lost something, or overlooked by mom and dad. Whatever she becomes in life is a result of her own choices, made every day when she chooses to get out of bed. Blaming who she is on her past is weakness she won’t engage in.

  • 2. Riley:  “Even if I wasn’t a Queen, I’d still serve Riley. She’s worth it.

Riley is a strange amalgamation of mother figure, mentor,  older sister, and good friend contained in a single woman for Sorinna. Riley found her the night her father was murdered and promised to keep her safe, no matter what. No matter what faults people attribute to the Queen of Dena Nehele, Sorinna will never let anyone accuse Riley of not keeping her word. She’s learned how to (and how not to) deal with people under Riley’s wing over the course of her young life and hopes that the lessons she’s gleaned from watch Riley in action will help her be a better Queen in the future.

She doesn’t agree with everything (or everyone) her mentor does in the course of rulership, but she supports Riley because Riley gave of herself and her time when she could have pawned Sorinna off on someone else. She wants to be the friend to Riley that Riley has been to Darcia Glassade.

  • 3. Gardening: “Unlike people, the land never lies about what it needs.

Sorinna loves giving her blood and strength to the land despite the personal cost to herself. Years spent with Landen and Blood farmers have given her a working knowledge of how and when to plant crops and how to judge a land’s soil for health. She loves growing Dhemlani peppers for the spice it lends to some of her favorite dishes.

    Dislikes:

  • 1. Lying:If you have to lie to get it, you might as well steal it. At least then you’re being honest.

Sorinna hates lying and duplicity, especially when it's done to someone acting in good faith. She knows it's naive to think that people don’t lie, or that she won’t have to bend the truth in the course of her duties, but there are some people who lie just to hurt others. Or because they get their jollies from playing people against each other. She refrains from lying to the people closest to her, as her guilt tends to get the best of her.

  • 2. Fighting:  “I can handle myself in a scrap. But if people are punching each other in the face, we’ve failed at diplomacy.

Sorinna grew up in Tulzbruja where people work with their hands, pull their weight, and enjoy life. Riley’s Court in Tulzbruja was especially rough-and-tumble and the so-called “Bitch Queen” made certain that the young woman knew how to defend herself in light of her childhood. Sorinna isn’t a pacifist but she considers physical combat the very last option on a long-list of other tactics. Fighting signals that you’re out of ideas and must resort to violence to get things done.

  • 3. Dark rooms: “I like the lights on.

Her father used to turn down the lights and read her bedtime stories in order to put her to sleep. For years, Sorinna associated the darkness with a time for rest and relaxation. That changed the night her father was slain. She woke to find his assassin, a shadow that could pass through walls, savaging her father’s body. Darkness equals danger to the traumatized young woman, who insists that the lights are turned up to their highest setting in any room she occupies. Even when she nods off or falls asleep, she refuses to remain in darkness and cannot not remain in a dark room longer than a few seconds.

    Fears:

  • 1. The Guilds:We’re trusting thieves, killers, and spies to watch our backs just because they said they will? Yeah, I see this ending well…

The Guilds are a powerful force in Dena Nehele. Too powerful, in Sorina’s opinion. Yes, they existed before she was born. If she’s unlucky, they’ll exist long after she’s dead. Two of the three hold responsibility for the death of her father and she’s not sure that the third isn’t spying on her now to use her mistakes against her in the future. Riley’s carved out a deal with them. But if something happens to her, then there's no guarantee they'll deal with a new Queen.

  • 2. Riley’s Fall from Power:I barely knew the rest of Dena Nehele before Riley. I don’t want to know what it looks like without her.

Sorinna is grateful to Riley, the person who took her in at the worst time in her life. Over the years, however, Riley has made enemies. Riley had sold off pieces of her soul in order to patch up Dena Nehele’s wounds. She fears the day that Dena Nehele pushes Riley to make a choice that leads to her loss of favor with the Guilds or one that pushes the Aristos to move against her without regard to her allies.

Sorinna is further afraid that a day will come when she has to save Riley the way that Riley saved Darcia.

  • 3. Her Father’s Killer:Whoever it is is still out there, waiting for the right moment to end my life. Sometimes I lie awake and wish they’d get it over with so I don’t have to live in terror.

The people responsible for murdering her father were never caught. The assassin is probably still out there, killing other people without a care in the world. The people who hired that assassin are probably watching and waiting to strike. It scares Sorinna to her core know that she could be in the same room with them and never know it.

    Craft Strengths:
  • 1. Queen’s Touch: Sorinna’s Touch is always available to her males. So long as a male bonded to her is standing within arm’s reach, he may benefit from the “aura” of her touch without physical contact. This is most useful in social settings where public displays are not possible, or in private when Sorinna is pacing the floor, thinking, and not exactly amenable to being touched at a particular time.

  • 2. Fine Telekinetic Control: Growing up in Riley’s Court in Tulzbrujah requires thinking on your feet and being able to take a hit and keep moving. Sorinna’s White is powerful in its own right, but she knows she can’t stand toe-to-toe with much of Riley's Court or even her own males. Her use of fine manipulation has allowed her to call a dagger from across a room, tie someone’s shoelaces from a distance and, in one memorable sparring match, slam someone’s eyelids shut long enough for her to pass through a wall and escape.

    Craft Weaknesses:
  • 1. Emotional Manipulation: Riley can sway crowds like the Queens in the old stories, bringing the people to her side regardless of the issue. This was the first bit of Craft she asked Riley to teach her and it failed spectacularly. Two people out of twelve looked at her with mild amusement. Everyone else just seemed...indifferent toward her. Sorinna hopes that this is just because she needs more time to grow into her power, rather than a commentary on her personal charisma.

  • 2. Queen’s Gift: Sorinna is capable of giving her strength to the land and feeding it just like any other Queen. Her problem is that it takes twice the usual offering of blood and Craft to produce the same effect. This has slowed down some of her education in tending to the land, as she normally needs food and rest before trying again.

    History:

Petra Verduzca was on a tour of the realms when she met Prince Gheorghe Roman in Bidea while he served in the Second Circle of the Territory Court. A lover of history and other cultures, Gheorghe peppered Petra with historical questions over a range of topics, leading to the pair spending much time together. By the time Gheorghe’s contract with the Territory Court had ended, Petra was pregnant and the pair returned to his home Province of Tulzbruja, where he became a mostly private citizen attempting to recover the land that his family lost to another aristo family several decades ago.

Their daughter, Sorinna, arrived shortly after their return to Tulzbruja and the three lived in relative peace for several months after the Queenling’s birth.

When Petra’s brother arrived and expressed distaste at the notion that his younger sister had borne a half-breed daughter, he shamed her into returning home. Gheorghe was prepared to pack up their child and leave, believing that his claim against his rival family would go nowhere due to the other family’s influence. But Petra explained the prejudice that Sorinna would suffer in Dhemlan and convinced him not to go through with it. She promised to visit often and returned home with her brother, leaving the infant in her father’s care.

    She never returned.

Gheorghe raised Sorinna as best he could, but life with a young Queen was a challenge, to say the least. Eventually, he found a position in Court of Rilandra Vlas, hoping that he could eventually petition the young Queen recommend a mentor for Sorinna. Meanwhile, he continued his investigations into his family’s history, seeking evidence that would let him reclaim their lands and their Aristo standing from the people who’d stolen it from them.

Sorinna received the White at her Birthright Ceremony, to her lasting pride. Her father pushed her to delve into its power in full, demanding that she put her best effort into everything she attempted so that she attracted a mentor who’d prepare her to rule her own Court someday. Sorinna imagined a being the Queen of all Tulzbruja someday, with her father as her Steward and earning her mother’s love and respect. Perhaps then she would come home and stay.

Two months after Birthright Ceremony, Sorinna’s dreams were shattered.

She and her father often fell asleep reading stories on the couch before he woke and carried her off to bed. Her father’s scream woke her, and she jumped out of bed to seek the source of the disturbance. She found him as the assassin, a creature made of shadows, cut her father to ribbons while she watched. When her sobs revealed her hiding place, the creature fixed its eyes upon her and reached into her mind with power she couldn’t comprehend.

    "Run". it said.

Sorinna ran as fast as her little legs could carry her. She ran from the house, across the field, and into the forest to hide, praying to Mother Night that her Dad would come and find her.

Riley’s people found her huddled in a small cave two days later, shivering and starving. Only the presence of Riley Vlas herself coaxed the little girl from her hiding spot. Riley promised Sorinna that she would keep her safe and eventually gained the young woman’s trust. Over the years, she’s watched Riley’s growing collection of males and her ever-increasing issues with the Aristos who want nothing more than to put the so-called “Bitch Queen” in her place. Riley has pushed Sorinna make connections with the people around her, to consider the effects of her actions on the Landen and the Blood instead of only the latter. Riley is a complex blend of mentor, surrogate mother, and good friend to the young Queen.

While Sorinna doesn’t agree with every lesson she’s learned from Riley, she believes that Riley’s done the best she can with enemies surrounding her at every turn. Her deal with the Guilds is upsetting, but a necessary evil.

Sorinna just hates the idea of using evil to fight evil.

When Riley ascended to the Territory Seat, Sorinna came to Bidea to shadow her and prepare for her eventual Offering Ceremony. In one year’s time, Sorinna must take the final steps toward becoming a ruling Queen. Riley can’t protect her forever, and the factions of Dena Nehele won’t let her stay on the sidelines.

Meanwhile, her father’s killer is still out there and Sorinna dreads the night that said killer decides that tying up loose ends is worth the provoking wrath of the Territory Queen and the Guilds.

    Character in Play:

Sorinna, you don’t have to do this.” Cezar said, for what must have been the tenth time in five minutes.

“For once, I agree with Cezar.” Marius said, leaning against the door frame of the darkened room. It was her room, of course, but the interior was pitch black. It was around 9pm and most of the estate was down in the common room enjoying the company of some person or other than Riley brought in to entertain them. Sorinna knew she needed to be in there, socializing and making acquaintances, but this little experiment had taken precedence.

I know that I don’t have to, but I have to. Close the door behind me.” she said, taking a deep breath and steeling herself.

Cezar and Marius both nodded and said nothing else. They knew when Sorinna’s mind was made up.

Sorinna took a deep breath, released it, and stepped into the room.

The first ten seconds were the easiest.

The room was just pitch black and she knew where everything was. Bed in the northeast corner. Nightstand to the right of the bed with the witchlamp. The closet was behind her and to the left. The window was beyond the drapes straight ahead.

Fifteen seconds in, Sorinna was okay.

Sixteen seconds in, Sorinna smelled the blood.

Blood, thick and coppery, was all over the room. She could smell it, taste it, feel it all around her. The moaning came next. Painful, wrenching groans accompanied by the sound of metal slicing through flesh. A knife, stabbing, stabbing, stabbing into flesh over and over again. The body would stop moving in a second, would stop moving forever, growing cold just after.

Two pinpricks of red light, eyes, opened in the shadows before her. The shadows melded around it into the form of a person, a person staring at her with unconcealed malice and hatred. The same eyes that had haunted her since she was a little girl, terrified at the sight of her father, the strongest man she knew, being butchered by a demon.

Those red eyes stared at her, unblinking, before moving closer and closer still.

I know where you are, Sorinna Roman.

Her heart was hammering so loudly that she knew all of Bidea could hear it. Riley would hear it and she’d come to help. Riley always came to help.

She can’t save you, Sorinna. You’re all alone in the dark. With me.

    N-no. I’m not alone…

    Run.

    She woke up screaming.

Cezar and Marius were kneeling before her within seconds. Her Touch was already radiating, the aura moving them to calm even as her own heart raced and she tried to catch her breath. Every witchlamp in the room was alight at its highest setting. Sorinna allowed herself to relax a little bit as Cezar and Marius looked up at her, concern radiating from both of them.

    How long was I out?

Long enough for Riley to send someone looking for you. We said you’d be there in a minute. Should I go get her?” Cezar asked.

Sorinna shook her head. “Don’t bother. I just got startled, that’s all.

“It was another dream, wasn’t it? That’s the third one this week, Rinna. You need to tell Riley.” Marius said

No.” Sorinna said, her tone iron. “I’m not burdening Riley with this. She’s got enough shit on her plate right now without me adding to it. It’s just a dream. It went away before. It’ll go away again.” she said, softening her tone. Marius worried about her. He was trying to help and she knew that. But she wasn’t making another mess for Riley to solve, not when she needed to be in charge of her own shit.

Look, if it gets worse, I’ll tell her. Right now, just help me get my head on straight so we can go back to the party. Okay?” she asked, laying her hand on Marius’s cheek. He wanted to protest, to say something else, but a little bit of her Touch drew forth a sigh from him.

“If it gets worse, we go to Riley?”

    Deal.” she said.

    He nodded.

    They left for the party.

    They left the lights on.
