Appearance

Play By: Mads Wurms Kristoffersen (with silver hair)
Distinguishing Features:
At six foot three and silver hair (it started turning when he was seventeen and was completely silver by his eighteenth birthday), it’s hard to not at least notice Jeremiah briefly. Aside from those two features, there’s also the matter of his eyes: an eerie mix of blue-green. They’re the only thing that he ever got from the man that impregnated his mother (and he’d rather not think about that at all). There’s also scars decorating his torso and back from an incident when he was younger but most do not see those.
Personality

Personality:
Jeremiah is not a man who smiles easily or frequently. His expression, more often than not, is something more neutral with only the slightest twitches of his lips giving any indication of his mood, if any at all. Just because he isn't emotive doesn't mean there isn't a lot going on under the surface and there is, as with any Warlord Prince, a tumult within.

Underneath the exterior of calm and collected there is fiery, emotional man who was - once upon a time - a shitstirring youth. It is a careful balance to keep that side of him from coming out, and there are those who likely remember it, but he manages in thanks to growing up bonded and from all his ties to both the Court and the Jacks.

He is often blunt and to the point, not inclined to mince words. While he is not above small talk, he has no time for bullshit and this lends itself to a painful sort of honesty. This is to his detriment and others because the games of subterfuge and misdirection that are so popular among the Aristo get old and there's nothing quite like seeing an arrogant Aristo's reaction when you tell them just what you think.

Except that sometimes this is exactly what he can't do. As part of the Court he has to play as the others do. The right word here, a secretive smile there- it's all about appearances and Jeremiah has perfected that calm and collected exterior, the one that keeps people intrigued but also at a distance.

For the few that are let in, as most are kept at arm's length, they discover a man who can be more relaxed and at ease, able to laugh and banter and smile. His loyalty is unwavering to those that have earned it and it would take a truly heinous action to see it lost. At his core, Jeremiah is a man who is always striving for more, for better, and it's lead him to push himself too far, to stretch himself thin, but he always gets back up and keeps going because he can't ever stop.
Likes:
  • Cooking - Despite being an aristo, Jeremiah is not used to be waited on and cooked for. Instead he took it upon himself, once he was old enough, to learn how to cook things. Now that he’s older, there’s solace in cooking and making dishes and treats that he can share (especially when certain people have been eating poorly and he knows just the right thing to make). It’s not really much of a stretch to say that he doesn’t stress eat, he stress cooks and when that happens you can expect tasty things to show up.
  • Gardening - The odds are that if there is a garden and Jeremiah has access to it, then he will be in it. He doesn’t just sit around to enjoy the flowers but actively takes care of them. Maybe there’s a bit of craft in his touch or maybe he just remembers all the things his Mother taught him growing up but no matter what it is he has a deft, soft touch when it comes to caring for the things that grow therein.
  • Music - Piano specifically. Jeremiah enjoys sitting down and playing music as well as composing pieces. The ultimate gift from him is sheet music that he’s composed specifically for the person he’s given it to. He may also have a particular tell when it comes to playing the piano: you can likely guess his mood depending on the tone of what he is playing. Jeremiah’s aware of this quirk but he doesn’t seem to care enough to change it (or maybe it’s because he’ll take advantage of it if necessary).
Dislikes:
  • Monotony - It might be wanderlust, it may simply be that he doesn’t like being still, but whatever it is Jeremiah loathes tedium. The quickest way to drive him up a wall is to ask him to do something tedious or repetitious. There are reasons that he was something of a shitkicker when he was a teenager and as a way to break out of his directionless boredom was one of them.
  • Cold Weather - Already sporting a lower body temp than most, Jeremiah can’t stand being in the cold for very long. He can tolerate it at best but he’s likely to go through great lengths to ensure that he is warm. When the colder months do hit, he’ll either layer his clothing or ensure that it’s bought enchanted cloth that will keep him warm despite the temperature change.
  • Politics - Jeremiah was born to it, to being part of Court, but he would much rather see it rot than actively participate (and outside of Riley’s Court, he’s not got a high opinion of it or aristos). Yet it’s what must be done and so he does it. Sometimes it is a bit surprising to see him able to move through the aristo social circles with ease, especially if you don’t know his history and see him only as a Jack, but he does it and will absolutely not hesitate to do what needs to be done to ensure a better future for Dena Nehele and it’s people.
Fears:
  • Dreams / Nightmares - In his youth Jeremiah was in an incident that left him in a coma for little over a month. During that time he felt as if he lived an entire life of events that exist now only as snapshots and faint memories in his mind. To this day the coma’s mark remains, Jeremiah preferring to never have another dream or nightmare. It’s left him with a hard time distinguishing the waking world from the world of his dreams (they are too vivid, too alive, and always had been so even before the coma that made it that much worse) immediately upon waking. It has also lead to a particularly strange quirk: to those that are close, when they grip or shake hands, he will sometimes press two fingers to the pulse point in their wrist. Dreams, Jeremiah will tell you, do not have pulses. Never mind the truest part of the fear: that one day he will wake up again and everything he has done, everything he has accomplished, is all something made up in his head (or worse).
  • Loss of Control - Jeremiah is a walking oddity. It's more than the fact that he is both Aristo and a Jack but that he has - to this point - never felt the pull or fixation on a woman or otherwise. He fears the day that he does, the day that something catches his attention and he pursues it with a single-minded fervor to the detriment to all that is around him. It hasn't happened yet and he clutches at self-control and restraint, preferring the calm and collected to the true turmoil that is beneath and never wants to see released. Jeremiah’s ruts are hard enough on him as is, often hunting and sparring through them, with only bits and pieces available to him (what Riley tells him from their sparring or the stories he catches about the Warlord Prince who hunts down wildlife). In the back of his mind he never stops worrying about what will happen when he loses that last bit of himself. After all, there are worse things than fighting mountain lions.
  • Not Being Strong Enough - There’s very little chance that Jeremiah will talk about the dreams he had while in that coma but they left an additional mark on him in that he constantly strives for better. While he does not have the well behind him of someone darker, Jeremiah has learned to finesse and control what power he has to great lengths. This is all because of one reason: a deep-seated fear that he will not be, when it comes down to it, strong enough to do what needs to be done. Whether that is protect Riley, his mother, or even to get a job done for the guild, he is constantly pushing himself for more because failure can mean death (and it is not his own he worries about) and that is not acceptable.
Craft Strengths:
  • Combat Craft - When it comes to combat Jeremiah is a beast. For someone of lighter jewels, his ability to mix physical attacks with craft is exceptional. Whether this is because he’s had a sparring partner since he was seven or because he’s channeled many of his ruts into fighting, he has an uncanny ability to just keep going in combat and not stop.
  • Reading Emotion - Part of Jeremiah's ability to keep up the appearance of calm and collected - while in part to the many years of being bonded to Riley - is also because he is able to get a read on those around him. It's aided him as both a Jack, aristo, and bonded Warlord Prince that he's been able to make minor adjustments to his behavior and actions to ease things towards a more favorable outcome. The most noticeable one, of course, is that he's one of the few that is able to bring calm to Riley, knowing instinctively what to say or do.
Craft Weaknesses:
  • Sight Shielding - Jeremiah would never make it as an assassin as his ability to Sight Shield leaves something to be desired. There’s always something off when he tries to hide himself. Whether that is because it is not fully formed or because his feet are somehow still visible, he is better off not performing acts that require his physical presence be unknown.
  • Warming Spells - To add insult to the injury that is Jeremiah being colder than most, he also is not proficient at warming spells or enchantments. Keeping that bath at the perfect temperature or creating a bubble of warmth around himself is just not something he is good at doing much to his own frustration.
Life Story

Family:
Mother: Meredith Mercer (54 - 138AP) Priestess - Rose - Opal
Father: Piers Ionescu (66 - 126AP) - Warlord - Summer Sky - Opal
Half-Siblings:
Minerva Tailor (20 - 172AP) - Healer - Purple Dusk - Opal

History:
The Mercer family is not one of the oldest Aristo families in Dena Nehele, though they are an old Aristo family. They immigrated from Dharo before the Purge, bringing with them their trade and skill as merchants. Settling into Tulzbruja, they ran livestock - primarily sheep - on the land they acquired and began a more hands on process as they produced cloth from the wool they were able to make.

Their family name, Mercer, has been preserved from mother to daugher. There was, in fact, no male heir born to them for quite some time. At least, not until Jeremiah was born.

The story of Jeremiah’s birth is just another tale of how far the Aristo can take The Game. Piers, a Myos guildsman, was contracted by a rival family to seduce and ensure that his mother Meredith would be with child. Upon the birth of the child - a girl, as it was common knowledge that girls were what the Mercer family always had - and her birthright ceremony, Meredith would be killed and her heir spirited away to be raised in the hands of the rival family.

Except Meredith was as sharp-eyed as she was sharp-tongued and, through consulting and confirming with a Black Widow, discovered Piers’s treachery. She left him no room for argument or movement against her, poisoning his meal. He was left with no choice in the matter: either he left with the antidote, never to move against her and her unborn child again, or she would let him die there and bury his body.

Piers made his choice, taking his life and the antidote with him, and disappeared from the Mercer land. Meredith kept her child because, despite the circumstances, did not see herself opening up once more to anyone for such a chance. The months passed and, to the surprise of everyone, she had a boy. It was only a few short days after his birth that he showed signs of being a Warlord Prince.

Jeremiah was named her heir at his birthright ceremony and, of course, there was no mention at all of his father. It set something of a tone for the rest of his life, one that Meredith did not help, wherein Jeremiah was supposed to always be alert and always looking out.

Which is likely why Jeremiah, as a child, was something of a precocious brat. At some point, during his early childhood, he was running away from his mother after playing in the mud to avoid bathing. Looking for an avenue of escape, he found one in a tree by the name of Riley. She helped him up the tree and they ended up hiding up in the tree for hours until they were eventually found by both their families.

There might have been worries and concerns but it was clear, from the behavior of both children - though neither were truly aware of it at the time - that the little Warlord Prince had found his Queen. It meant that from that point forward, Jeremiah was never that far away from Riley and their families interacted (though really it was just Meredith frequently having meals and drinking wine with Ralene while they talked about their children).

It was when Riley first came to rule that it was realized that the easiest way to bring calm to the young Queen was to work through her Warlord Prince. While Jeremiah was just as much trouble at times - as strong-willed and strong-headed - he was younger and without as much direction. It was Adrian that decided that it would be best to see the young man start training as a Jack under his friend’s Savi tutelage.

Barely thirteen, with his mother’s approval, Jeremiah began to learn the ins and outs of being a Jack. As he grew and learned, having a stronger focus, he would be able to bring the same to his Queen and strengthen her as he was strengthened.

Things came to head, however, when Jeremiah’s first rut manifested and things did not seem to click into place. While he was close to Riley, most likely to be the one he would fixate on, he was instead overwhelmed with dread and fear. To everyone’s surprise, he disappeared with only a perplexed and concerned Riley the last to have seen him.

It wasn’t until days later that he was found, barely conscious and alive, torn up from fighting the local wildlife. By the time a Healer was found, Jeremiah was unconscious and remained so even after he was healed. There were concerns that he would not wake at all but a little over a month passed and he did. At this point, there was a shift in Jeremiah. He would barely speak about his time in the coma, but what little he did would reveal that he had - in that time - lived out what felt like an entire length of life in dreams.

What happened in them was not talked about but it changed him, Jeremiah reigned himself in more. The fire was still there but he was more collected, calmer than he had ever been. His focus became to being Riley’s eyes and ears out where she could not be. At first, when he was younger - not even twenty - he did not roam far at all but as he grew older and was able to take contracts further out, he did so.

It was a focus, it was a purpose, it let him help her in other ways and he continues to do so.

Someday, when Meredith decides it is time, Jeremiah will end up taking over for her and taking his place at Court within Riley’s First Circle. Until then then, he travels and works - doing things with his own hands, as he prefers it - and comes back home to Court when he can’t keep away any longer.

Character in Play:
Jeremiah found the package waiting for him in his temporary rooms. It was neatly wrapped, simple twine holding it shut. Before he even reached it, he knew who it had come from.

He could not mistake something that came from Riley for anyone else.

His fingers slid under the twine until he reached the note and the knot. He tugged at the knot with his index finger while his other hand plucked up the note.

'It's in your size, don't even think about not wearing it. If I have to wear a dress, you're wearing a tux.

'... and yes that means you better drag your ass back here in time for the party.'

There was more to it, of course, including the time and the date of the party and the usual things they talked about. He was surprised that Riley was even doing this but then again he couldn't be. Not if she wanted to really make waves, not if she wanted to start showing that she was more than capable of playing the games the aristos were so fond of.

It was something he would absolutely be there for because, if anything, he would never miss a chance to see her potentially get to put people in their place.

Especially if it was some hoity-toity aristo.

Yet also it was because if Riley was making a move, planning on changing things up, then it was passed time for him to come back (and he had, already, been gone too long). He paused in reading over the note, head tilting towards the doorway as something caught his attention as his senses were tugged at.

There was a knock a moment later, another letter slid under the door.

His fingers flicked and it popped up in the air and came to him, sliding under the seal and opening it.

Annoyance flickered, a low rumble escaping from his chest. It was a slight change to the contract that had brought him out here as a Jack. One, he hoped, that would not keep him from returning for the party on time.

If it did, so help him he'd- Probably still finish the job and then have words about people not keeping on the proper time tables.

After all, he never left anything unfinished but he loathed others not taking care of their side of things.

(And, as it turned out, it did make him late. At least Riley wouldn't be too upset with him, even if he showed up with his bow-tie untied.)
