Appearance

Play By: Eric Bana
Distinguishing Features:

Shield is a tall man with a solid build. His dark hair and beard are graying, though he appears as spry and strong in early eighties as he did in his early twenties. He’s avoided much of the scarring and battle damage associated with long military service and frequent combat despite twenty years in the Ebon Guard. He does have two long, jagged scars running down the length of his back from a fight with a Warlord Prince a few years ago.

Personality

Personality:

Shield’s deep pride in his family, both the one he was born to and one he’s created, are tempered with bitterness and guilt over the people he's lost and driven away. A decorated military man who believes only the best of his people now wonders if they possess the ferocity necessary to defeat the monsters at their door. He knows that he still owns that ferocity and the will to survive that made him a successful scout during his years in the Ebon Guard. But the loss of his wife and daughter to the Waste and the Brood, respectively, has hardened that ferocity and resolve into a distinct lack of use for anyone who isn’t actively aiding in the fight or hiding behind paperwork rather than taking up weapons to drive back the Brood of the True Born.

His siblings tell him that he needs take some time away and grieve the passing of his wife and his daughter, Threnody. Shield, who once had a funny story or anecdote for everything, now meets his family’s concern with a growl and a sharp admonition to mind their own business. Talking about loss doesn’t make it go away and, contrary to popular belief, it doesn’t make the burden lighter. It just reminds him that there is a burden to carry and it’s his burden. No amount of talk is going to make Dea al Mon safer or better, so save it for the group-therapy sessions known as “Court” and let him work.

He can’t voice the guilt that consumes him daily. He left his beloved wife in a Sanctum instead of hunting down a cure for the Waste. When his eldest daughter, Threnody, called him on it, he threw her out of his home, which eventually lead to her death. He killed them both as surely as the Waste or the Brood did and he knows it. He recognizes that his Chalice is may be damaged because of his grief, but admitting it makes it real.

Once it’s real, he doesn’t know the first thing about dealing with it.

Hints of his old valiant and fun-loving nature shine through at times, especially when he’s with his granddaughter, Elegy. He’s shared with her his love of wood-carving, a talent that she’s picked up on better than her mother ever did. To the friends that he hasn’t driven away, he’s a good host and cook, someone that you can talk away night with over a bottle of wine after a hearty dinner.

Shield is a proud man who can't admit his mistakes, even when he knows that he's made too many to count. His faith in Mother Night, and himself, is damaged, perhaps irrevocably. His personal losses are mounting and it’s only a matter of time before he’s willing to sacrifice whatever honor he has left in order to protect what’s his.

He just prays that Elegy will forgive him when that day arrives.

Likes:

  • 1. The Ebon Guard: Shield’s years among the Ebon Guard were the best of his life and the friendships he created among them endure even now. His brothers are members in good standing, his father was a Major, and his great-great grandfather was a former Lord Obsidian. He’s always willing to assist members of the Ebon Guard, usually without question. They are an extension of his birth family and he would go to nearly any lengths to preserve their lives so that they can return to their own families and keep Dea al Mon strong.

  • 2. Family: Shield is a family man. The loss of his daughter, Threnody, drives him to stay connected, even when he'd rather not. Despite his more brooding and closed-off nature, Shield lives for his granddaughter Elegy most of all. He left a lot of things unsaid to Respite and Threnody, so he sees Elegy as his last chance to prove that he is a good man, that he wasn't always a terrible husband and poor father.

  • 3. Valor Tanithil:  Shield is responsible for the bulk of the training that helped Valor Tanithil learn control over his rage, which enabled Valor to serve his Queen. While Shield regrets, in some ways, teaching Valor to hone his bloodlust, he considers Valor’s training to be his finest work. Even more than that, he considers Valor the son that he never had, and enjoys the Warlord Prince's company as a person. He's talked him through a number if difficult situations, especially where his betrothed, Thorn, is concerned. Valor's presence dulls the pain of losing Threnody nearly as much as Elegy's does.

    Dislikes:

  • 1. Discussing Feelings: Shield has little desire to examine his feelings and even less to talk about them. Despite his guilt at leaving his wife, Respite, to the Sanctums and his self-loathing for Threnody’s death in seeking a cure for her, Shield doesn’t want to confess his secrets to anyone. He doesn’t deserve consolation for wrecking his family’s lives. So when a well-meaning person tries to coax him into discussion, he politely, but firmly, shuts them down.

  • 2. Reckless Behavior: Nothing irritates Shield more than someone who throws away a long-term advantage for short-term gain. Few people, in his mind, were more guilty of this than his own daughter, Threnody. She pushed herself to heal others at the cost of her own strength. She insisted upon going into areas that were under siege when it was more prudent to conserve her strength and fight more advantageous battles. Shield will never say that his daughter brought her fate upon herself, but he also won’t claim that she was blameless in it.

  • 3. Courts: Shield understands why the Courts exist, but he doesn't need to serve one outside of a contract. The sheer amount of back-biting and duplicity he's observed in the few Courts he's worked for has soured him on the idea of permanently attaching himself to one. Moreover, he hates the idea of being tied to one place when he loves seeing so much of the Territory. He'll aid them when asked, but he refuses a formal position each and every time to preserve his loyalty to the Territory over a single place.

    Fears:

  • 1. Killing Threnody: The idea that Threnody will suffer as one of the Brood for the rest of her life keeps Shield awake at night. But there is no known cure for the Waste or a way to reverse the transformation of one of the Dea al Mon into one of the Brood. He's heard of his daughter's crimes and knows that she'll continue to murder her former people unless she's stopped. Shield is terrified that the next time he lays eyes upon his daughter, he will have to end her life to save Elegy's, or his own.

  • 2. Confinement to the Sanctums: Shield remembers the last time he saw his wife, Respite, in the Sanctums of Devinos. He remembers the deep sense of suffering and sorrow in the Sanctums. He didn’t know it then, but he made a vow never to return, leading him to all but abandon his wife to suffer alone. In his nightmares, however, Threnody and Elegy, are locking him in the Sanctums because he’s contracted the Waste. He begs them not leave him alone in the dark, but they all turn and walk away, no matter how loudly he pleads.

He wakes up covered in sweat and wonders if that’s how Respite felt when he left her behind.

  • 3. Elegy joining the Brood: Shield’s granddaughter, Elegy, is the last remaining piece he has of his daughter, Threnody. He soothes his guilt by spoiling her, but he recognizes that she has her mother's fierce heart and reckless nature. He fears that Elegy will follow in her mother's footsteps, either dying in combat or being corrupted by the Brood. Worse, she'll finally see Shield as Threnody did: a terrible father, and a bitter, angry old man who abandoned his wife and ruined his daughter through his carelessness.

It shames him that he doesn't know which fate he prefers for her.

    Craft Strengths:

  • 1. Defensive Shielding: Shield’s competence in protection and defensive fighting manifests in his ability to quickly weave his defensive shields into bulwark capable of withstanding grievous assault. His shields are harder to break than his Blood Opal would suggest, a fact that most learn when he’s attacking their flank while they're still trying to shatter his initial shield.

  • 2. Memory Crystals: Shield is capable of processing and storing vast amounts of information in the course of his duties. His mind is focused and meticulously organized; he does not forget names, faces, dates for events. Shield can pack a dizzying amount of information into his memory crystals and produce several at a time without compromising his memories.

    Craft Weaknesses:

  • 1. Calming Rage: Shield's inability to process his own anger prevents him from calming others. It's a glaring fault that's going to cost him someday, and he knows it. But the work necessary to address makes him uncomfortable and so he's decided that he'll get along without it.

  • 2. Passing Through Objects: Shield considers himself a solid and dependable man, something that interferes with the idea of passing through objects. He's got to use the front (or back) door if he wants to get into or out of, a place.

    History:

Shield Valdonath is the eldest of three children groomed by his father, Lord Scourge Valdonath General in the Ebon Guard. He is three years older than the twins, Integrity and Fury, leading Scourge to groom him for leadership of both the family and within the Ebon Guard when he came of age. Scourge drilled his children on the Ebon Guard’s history and major battles, demanding that they learn everything they could about the forces that defended Dea al Mon from those who threatened the forest. Scourge encouraged sibling rivalry to an unhealthy degree, with Shield receiving slivers of his father’s attention when he succeeded and harsh criticism when he fell short. Shield, wishing to keep his father’s love and respect, devoted himself to his lessons in the hopes that it would aid him in receiving a darker Birthright Jewel and impressing his father.

The Purple Dusk was the darkest Birthright the family had seen in three centuries. Shield received the lion’s share of his father’s attention, suffocating under Scourge’s constant criticisms and demands. When the pressure became too great, Shield often lead his siblings away on excursions into the forests of Devinos.

Shield received the Blood Opal at his Offering and joined the Ebon Guard shortly after. Despite his resentment for his upbringing, Shield recognized that his father’s preparation helped in the Guard. Shield’s love of the forests and desire to travel lead to his deployment as a scout for reconnaissance and initial assault teams within the Guard. He was often assigned to work in alongside Red Cloaks or during solo missions designed to remove important targets. Fifteen years into his service, Shield met Shieldwoman Respite Alerron, a skilled Black Widow who seemed unimpressed with his family pedigree.

Shield wanted Respite from the moment he laid eyes on her, her strength and ferocity drew him like a moth to a flame. She took him to his limits during their sparring sessions and the bedroom. Their courtship lasted for two years, with a brief break due to a Warlord Prince’s attempt to stake a claim upon her. Eventually, Respite agreed to marry him. Shield advanced to lead a recon unit specializing in infiltration of Brood-held areas and eliminating high-profile targets. Shield’s ability to create detailed memory crystals containing his knowledge of travel routes was invaluable to his commanders.

Their daughter, Threnody, arrived five years after they married and Shield left the Ebon Guard to care for her. Threnody was a challenge from the onset, desiring more freedom than Shield was comfortable with. When she received the Blood Opal at her Birthright Ceremony, Shield was proud of her, but always cautioning her to use her power responsibly. They were so different in temperament that Shield often felt at a loss to relate to her in any meaningful way. This perceived inadequacy lead him to take on small jobs from Masters of the Guard in nearby villages who needed help guarding witches who aided in the defense of their Courts. Working gave Shield a sense of accomplishment that fatherhood didn’t. It also required Shield to spend time away from home, causing a rift in his relationship with Threnody that only widened over the years.

Their arguments grew fierce enough that Threnody waited until her father was away to make her Offering. Shield arrived the day after her Ceremony to learn that she’d earned her Sapphire Jewel. In his hurt and anger, Shield cast Threnody out of his home and his life, a move that he regrets even today. He regrets even more that Threnody tried to tell him that something was wrong with Respite prior to his discovery that she suffered from the Waste. Rather than listen, however, Shield let his anger get the best of him, forcing Threnody to leave before she could even tell her father of her pregnancy.

By the time he understood that Respite’s recent lack of focus and desire was a not a change in their marriage but the first signs of the Waste, it was too late. He reached out to Solace for aid, but learned that there was nothing that could be done for her outside of the Sanctums. Respite was admitted a few months after her diagnosis. Threnody was enraged at her father’s refusal to heed her warnings and seeming abandonment of her mother. Due to her pregnancy, however, she couldn’t search for a cure on her own. Respite died shortly after and Threnody blamed Shield for her death. He grieved his wife and only crawled out of his depression to accept Valor’s request for training in order to control his more feral nature as a Warlord Prince. He grew closer to Valor, privately considering him the son that he never had.

In 186, Shield received word of a Brood offensive in Kassel. Despite the problems between them, Shield knew that Respite would never forgive him if he allowed his daughter to die in battle without lifting a finger. He arrived too late, however, learning that Threnody fell in defense of her unit.

Devastated, Shield returned home to mourn. Weeks later, his fifteen year-old granddaughter, Elegy, was released into his care. Things were difficult for the pair at the start, for Elegy sought the same independence and appeared as reckless as her mother. Over time, Elegy understood her grandfather’s caution and his desire to protect the remaining members of his family. Shield slowly recovered, returning to work as an escort, bodyguard, and scout in various courts. He’s also watched Elegy undergo her Offering and join the Red Cloaks.

Recently, Shield discovered rumors of a Brood cell lead by Wraith Estalon and his second-in-command, Pestilence Narovan. Following those clues, learned that Pestilence is Threnody. He’s wrestled with this knowledge, unsure of how or when to explain to Elegy that her mother is still alive, but as one of the monsters corrupting and destroying their people. He gave up on Respite. He pushed Threnody into the arms of the Brood.

He’ll die before he allows Elegy to fall into their grasp.

    Character in Play:

Shield entered the Black Castle, fighting down the urge to shudder as he headed down the path. He’d been thousands of times, but this place was the heart of the Ebon Wood and he was always awed by that power. He'd worked here before. Time and the desire to forge a legacy that his children, that his family could take pride in, forced him to decline an increase in station through service. More than once, Shield expected to find someone on his doorstep, ready to insist that he change his mind. The Warlord inhaled, exhaled, and walked down a long corridor before making a left at the T-shaped juncture.

Perhaps the Master of the Guard had summoned him here to do just that.

The corridor wound around until it reached a small lobby. To Shield’s right, a dark-haired female wearing the Purple Dusk stood and greeted him. Shield recalled that Scribe Alerron had blonde hair and piercing blue eyes, marking this woman as someone new.

Hello, Lady. My name is Shield Valdonath. I’m here to see the Master of the Guard.” he said, fixing the young woman with a patient, but unwavering gaze.

Good morning, Lord Valdonath. Please head back. Prince Tanithil is expecting you.

Shield nodded to the younger woman and strode toward Valor’s office. He’d not seen the young Warlord Prince in ten years, but the moment his letter arrived, Shield dropped everything and came to Nieste. Shield rapped twice on the door, greeted by Valor’s voice before his hand had fallen to his side.

    Enter.

Shield opened the door and was greeted by the scents of blood, metal, and sandalwood.

Valor Tanithil sat behind his desk, dressed in a dark violet suit with a black shirt. Shield took in the details of the office at a glance, noting its spartan furnishings. The scent of blood, however, was more telling than anything else. The rumors of the Black Court’s Master of the Guard seemed closer to true than false, and Shield once more felt a swell of shame at his handiwork.

Hello, old friend.” Valor said, leaning back to regard him.

Does he hate me for what I did to him? Does he hate me for who he’s become, in the name of his Queen?

Shield couldn’t help the involuntary tensing of his posture, and he focused on the wall just beside and behind Valor’s head, unwilling to look the Warlord Prince in the eyes. Valor must have sensed his tension, for the scent of blood in the room immediately receded but did not fade altogether.

Prince Tanithil, it’s good to see you.” he said, bowing to the Warlord Prince who stood deeper in the Abyss and higher in station.

Valor smiled but it didn’t reach his eyes. It looked more like the smile of an Arcerian Tiger watching his dinner walk right into his home. Shield folded his hands in front of him, standing tall.

Lady Scribe isn’t at her station.” Shield said, nodding back toward the lobby.

She resigned. Family matter.” Valor said, his gaze never leaving Shield’s face.

    Silence.

    She knows?

    She knows.

    Not good.

I saw Threnody. She was with Shade Alerron. He's calling himself Wraith something-or-other now. They’re working together.” Valor said.

Pestilence.” Shield corrected. “She calls herself Pestilence, now.

Be that as it may, I need them found. Their little legion of monsters are killing and corrupting more of our people, turning more and more of them into Brood every day. They've taken Bad Wildungen. They have Kassel. We can't stand for it.” Valor said.

Nor should you. I’m here to help.” Shield said.

What do you need to get started?

    A competent Black Widow.

Valor's smile grew brighter, more feral. Again, Shield resisted the urge to bolt from the room.

    I know just the person.
