Bringing The Fight To Them

The forest had just begun to turn its golden and green hue with the coming fall. Since the attack on the Black Castle some months before, Tempest had spent more of her time out in the forest, listening, meditating, preparing but she still felt...listless. Lost.

She set down the letter that had arrived from Flair Rilindisil some days prior, offering her, perhaps, what she was seeking: purpose. While not as bloodthirsty as her cousin Vengeance, Tempest still maintained a fierceness to her that she kept honed. Vengeance was a blunt force brute attack -- Tempest was the thin rapier strike through the heart. That’s how she saw herself. That’s how she differentiated herself from Vengeance’s wild and reckless nature. But they both shared the same passion and fierceness when it came to defeating the Brood.

The attack on the Black Castle had proven one thing to Tempest: the Dea al Mon were losing their fight with the Brood.

For Willow’s sake, Tempest could not let that happen.

This was the only reason why she had entertained Flair’s request at all. Willow was in Glory Glade and looked to remain there. Tempest decided to use this time apart to make the difference she had not be able to make during the Brood attack that had separated them.

She would not be going alone.

**Cousin,** she sent to the feral Vengeance. **Do you have time to meet me? I wish to speak with you about an opportunity.**

Tempest felt sharp interest color the psychic thread between them. **Sparrow and I are just returning from patrol. Meet us at the barracks,** Vengeance came back to say. Tempest nodded, though Vengeance could not see, and went to mount her horse, Swift. He set off at a canter, passing underneath the gold and green leaves like a cream ghost, with Tempest’s red cloak adding another striking color to the autumn around them.

Minutes later, she arrived at the barracks. Leaving Swift outside, she went in to find her cousin and the Healer that was now usually found at Vengeance’s side more and more. Had they become lovers, Tempest wondered? Perhaps, but it didn’t matter. Vengeance would not be distracted by a lover when it came to Brood.

“Report,” she commanded the women gently but firmly as she approached them in the state of disarming themselves. She would handle patrol business first and then bring up the letter. Sparrow would be included in the conversation about the letter since the offer was extended to Tempest's entire team but Tempest would let each member make their own decision.

Another patrol with nothing to report except fleeting scents and the ever-present feeling of being watched.

It frustrated Vengeance to no end. She desired to sink her blades into something and the Brood had been stubbornly out of sight for weeks now. Only Sparrow’s presence at her side kept her from charging off to find one of their dens to vent her fury. The Healer was both partner for fierce sparring and partner for equally passionate lovemaking. If the squad had gossip to speak about the pair, Vengeance paid it no mind. She knew what she wanted.

She had planned to take out the itching frustration of their quiet patrol by pinning Sparrow to the first sturdy wall she could find -- had even begun envisioning the Healer coming undone under her fingers -- when her cousin, Tempest, interrupted her daydreaming with, **Cousin, do you have time to meet me. I wish to speak with you about an opportunity.**

Opportunity? All thoughts of a naked Sparrow were discarded as Vengeance’s mind zeroed in on that word: opportunity. She knew her cousin could sense her sharp interest even before she replied with, **Sparrow and I are just returning from patrol. Meet us in the barracks.**

Vengeance turned to look at Sparrow. “Tempest is coming to meet us. She says that she wishes to speak with me about an...opportunity. She did not request to speak to me alone once I told her we were returning from patrol.” It was the closest Vengeance would come to saying “stay with me” in that moment, since her mind was racing over what the discussion could possibly be about.

They went into the barracks after removing the tack from their mounts. Vengeance had just unlaced the first of her vambraces when Tempest strode in. “Report,” she commanded but it was softer, more thoughtful than normal.

“The usual,” Vengeance replied in a soft snarl. “Nothing.” Nothing was not entirely true but it was closer to the truth than just the feeling of being watched. She looked at Sparrow to see if her Healer-lover-partner had anything to add.

Watching Vengeance during these patrols was both entertaining and alarming. Vengeance could sense that Verdant was around.  She almost wanted to ask her what she was picking up on... and worried that if she did Vengeance would somehow narrow the trail.

There were moments when Sparrow was certain she knew where the Brood Queen was... and she hoped it was just her imagination.  But she was rather certain, sadly, that it was not.  Verdant had this way of focusing her gaze that made Sparrow feel as if she was alone in the world... even with Vengeance so close by.

She didn't speak to Verdant often.  At all, actually, after that little rendezvous in the woods.  At first because she was too wary to do so. Now?  Now she didn't because she was concerned that Vengeance would come hunt her down to work out frustrations between her legs.  Not that she complained.

Having the attention of the dangerous Witch was exhilarating.  There was little that could remove the stress in her veins quite as effectively as Vengeance trying to command their lovemaking, and the sounds she could pull from the female's throat as she flipped the tables on her.

Would Verdant be like... what the hell was she thinking?  THAT way lie ruin.  There was no chance in hell, ever, of her allowing such a thing.

Tempest is coming to meet us.

She blinked, her attention refocusing on Vengeance as she felt herself snap back into the present.  It was dangerous to let herself get so distracted, but there it was.  She WAS distracted.  Verdant's protection of her was coming across as almost sweet... and it was alarming.

The knowledge that the Priestess was going to meet them.. it had her cheeks flushing a little.  Like a child caught with her hand in the sweet jar.  Let Vengeance believe she'd been thinking of a naked romp.. it wasn't altogether untrue.

"This should be interesting, then."

She was the one to remove the saddles as they made it into the stables, laying them astride their stands before moving to start grooming the mounts they had barely put any work into on this patrol.  Tempest entering was.. certainly noticed.

The female's Jewels matched her own, after all.  It was like feeling a wave of familiarity entering her awareness.. and it had her fixing a careful gaze on the Priestess before inclining her head.  "Priestess.  There was nothing visibly out of the ordinary.  In fact..."  She frowned, pulling the brush against the horse's hide in thought.  "It feels as if the Brood have truly pulled back, though they may be watching us.  I don't know what to make of it."

Also true.  She truly didn't know what to make of Verdant's interest.
